Study abroad this January in London, a global hub for arts, music, fashion, and literature. Earn three credits in three weeks exploring either Contemporary British Theatre or Comparative Health Issues. Both courses are taught at CIEE Global Institute – London and complemented with co-curricular activities designed to increase intercultural understanding.

Home of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games, London is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city. London is at the cutting edge of the arts scene and provides access to music, fashion, museums (which are all free!), comedy, and theater. There are abundant opportunities for enjoying London – with eight Royal Parks right in the heart of the city and more green space than any comparable city in the world.

EXCURSIONS & ACTIVITIES

  • Explore a historic location outside London on a day trip. Previous trips have included, Oxford, Cambridge, Bath, and Canterbury.
  • See the famous Tower of London, including the crown jewels.
  • Explore central sites in the City of Westminster, home of Buckingham Palace, Whitehall, St James’ Park, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, and the Palace of Westminster.
  • Browse the urban markets on Sundays in Shoreditch and Brick Lane; eat fabulous food in Borough Market; shop for souvenirs in Camden.
  • Experience Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre on the banks of the River Thames.

  • HOUSING

    You will be living in a hostel in Bloomsbury, which is a 10 minute walk from the CIEE London Global Institute and 5 minute walk to Kings Cross St Pancras station. The hostel is conveniently located near amenities such as grocery stores, book shops, restaurants, cafes and fast food outlets. There is also a pharmacy and post office close by.  

    It is a modern, hip hostel for student groups. You will be allocated with other CIEE students from your program in single sex, en-suite rooms. There will be between 2-6 students per room and linen and towels are provided. There is a 24/7 reception desk, laundry facilities, and Wi-Fi internet.

  • Meals

    In your housing, there are no kitchen facilities for cooking meals but breakfast is provided each morning of the program. A café and restaurant is available in your accommodation building.

Academics

During the January in London program, students spend three weeks taking coursework focused either on: Comparative Health Systems or Contemporary British Theatre. Both courses are complemented with co-curricular activities to immerse students in the culture and facilitate intercultural learning.

CIEE Global Institute – London is located in the heart of Bloomsbury. It sits in one of the most vibrant and student-populated neighborhoods of central London. It features Georgian-style architecture, 10 classrooms, a café, garden terrace, and tech zone.

Academic Culture

The program is made up of three weeks of classes with an intensive orientation beforehand. CIEE classes are designed to follow U.S. academic culture. Class attendance is strictly enforced both for classes and required co-curricular excursions.

Class Format

Courses taught at CIEE London are for CIEE students only. Courses are taught Monday – Friday. Instruction is supported and augmented online by our learning management system, Canvas.

Grading

Assessment is based on the individual’s overall performance in the course, including essays, coursework, and final examinations or papers. Students must check with their professors to find out exam and project presentation dates. Under no circumstances will CIEE alter deadlines or exam dates for study abroad students who have made conflicting travel plans. The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used.
