The capital city has a population of approximately two million in the metropolitan area, with a cosmopolitan city atmosphere, and rich cultural offerings. Copenhagen is known for being an environmentally friendly city where cars share the streets with bicycle commuters. The public transportation system is efficient, clean, and easily accessible - consisting of buses, trains, metro lines, and ferries. The Metro brings passengers from the Kastrup International Airport to the city center in twenty minutes. Crime is low in Copenhagen and it remains one of the safest capital cities in Europe.
Excursions & Activities
- Excursions may include destinations such as Ribe - the oldest town in Denmark, founded by Vikings, Århus - 2017 European Cultural Capital, or Skagen - the country’s nethermost town.
- Faculty-led visits to contemporary arts exhibitions help students explore the program topics in a cultural context.
- Experience Copenhagen’s transformation from a Viking fishing village founded in the 10th century to a world-leader in sustainability and innovation, with visits to the National Museum of Denmark.
Daily LifeClick to Open
Hostel: Located in a busy downtown part of the city, a 15-minute walk from the Global Institute. The rooms offer private and comfortable bunks, and each room has a private bathroom. Students will have access to a shared kitchen, study area, screening rooms, laundry facilities, a gym and indoor pool, as well as a large lounge, bar and café area. The rooms are cleaned every 4 days. Final housing assignments are solely at the discretion of CIEE.
Meals are not included. Students prepare their own meals in shared kitchen facilities. CIEE provides basic cooking utensils and cleaning supplies. Students also may explore the myriad restaurants in the neighborhood.

What you need to knowThe program details
Spend January in Copenhagen exploring issues of gender and sexuality by reading, watching, and listening to gender-themed, contemporary artistic productions. In-class work is augmented with visits to the city’s rich variety of cultural institutions and organizations relevant to the theme. For instance, a day-trip to Denmark’s second largest city, Århus to visit the Women’s Museum which focuses on women’s history and contemporary gender issues. Presentations from people engaged in gender issues and sexual freedom. Visit to one of North Europe’s best-known museums of modern art, Louisiana, or the Freetown Christiania.

All students take the required course, Gender and Sexuality.
