Shanghai is a commercial giant, a financial and cultural hub, and home to the largest container port on Earth. Examine the rapidly changing nature of global business in Shanghai and prepare for a career in international business through exposure to core concepts, important theories, and case studies, as well as site visits to Chinese companies and discussions with leading practitioners. Courses are taught in English at CIEE Shanghai and complemented with co-curricular activities designed to increase intercultural understanding.

Your Destination
From its new financial district of Pudong, home to some of the tallest skyscrapers in the world, to its long history of foreign influence, fashion, and economic prowess, Shanghai is sure to leave any visitor awe-struck. Join its population of 24 million in urban centers, on elevated light rails, or on the world’s first commercial high-speed Maglev train, and explore every inch of this dynamic city.
CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Shanghai.

EXCURSIONS & ACTIVITIES

HOUSING
Hotel-style dorm. 1) Stay at the International Exchange Service Center (IESC) with a CIEE roommate. Located next door to the CIEE Study Center, students stay in rooms with twin beds, one desk, one wardrobe,an ensuite bathroom, and laundry facilities. The dorm is also equipped with Wi-Fi and 24-hour security. Residence hall.
Or 2) Stay in a residence hall located on the East China Normal University (ECNU) campus. Students have access to a common lobby, laundry facilities, a student computer room and study lounge on every other floor, and a kitchen and bathrooms on each floor. The residence hall is a 10-minute walk from the CIEE Study Center, and is within walking distance to a light rail and other public transportation. -

Students choose one, two, or three 4-week sessions. The program is designed for students majoring or minoring in economics, international business, business management, or marketing, or for Chinese or Asian Studies majors with an interest in learning more about the business environment in China.
Courses are focused on contemporary business issues affecting China and China’s current role as the world’s second largest economy. Company site visits allow students to apply theories learned in class and contextualize the country’s economic rise within China’s largest business hub. Students can also enroll in an optional Communicative Chinese Language course to improve their language skills. In-class work is augmented with co-curricular visits to the city’s rich variety of cultural institutions and organizations relevant to the course offering.
The CIEE Shanghai is located on East China Normal University (ECNU)’s downtown Putuo campus, and is known as the “Garden University” for its beautiful grounds by the Liwa River.

Academic Culture
CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. Each course is a full semester in content, so the pace is accelerated, and the workload is demanding. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel away from Shanghai when classes are in session.
Class Format
Classes taught at the CIEE Global Institute are for CIEE students only. Classes are scheduled Monday-Friday, and attendance is strictly enforced for both classes and required co-curricular excursions. The class typically features a combination of traditional lecture, discussion, and co-curricular activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation. Instruction is supported and augmented online by our learning management system, Canvas.
Grading
The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students are assessed based on class participation, homework, individual project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations.
