Your CIEE Summer Intern and Study Abroad program in Santiago lasts 6 weeks and features three key components: A part-time internship with an international organization (15-20 hours per week), an internship seminar, and a 3-credit academic course taught online through CIEE’s global academic partner, ASU. Enhance your experience with co-curricular and extracurricular activities while building career skills, expanding your professional network, and immersing yourself in Chilean culture. Housing & Meals

Housing

CIEE Santiago offers diverse housing options to ensure you're comfortable in your home away from home. From homestays to residence halls, we will strive for your accommodation preferences to be met. Homestays are ideal for students who wish to experience living with local families in apartments or houses. CIEE Santiago also offers non-homestay accommodations in residence halls for students who want to live with other Chilean and international students.    

Standard Housing:  Includes a room in a homestay or residence hall.

Homestays: Includes a private room (single or double placement with another CIEE student) in the residence of a host family. Homestays feature weekly laundry, Wi-Fi, and two meals per day. Homestays are nearby subway stations and public transportation, coffee shops, convenience stores, and ATMs are available in metro stations, restaurants, and other amenities.   
Residence Halls: Includes a triple or double room in a residence hall, located within 30 minutes of the city center. Students can prepare their meals in the facility and access study areas and other amenities. This type of accommodation offers fully furnished kitchen space, laundry facilities shared with other students, shared bathrooms, and Wi-Fi.

Select Housing: Includes a single room in a residence hall. Residence halls are located five minutes (on foot) from a subway station that connects with the rest of Santiago (30-minute commute to city center). Students can prepare their meals in the facility and access study areas and other amenities. This type of accommodation offers fully furnished kitchen space, laundry facilities shared with other students, shared bathrooms, and Wi-Fi. Select housing requires an additional fee.

A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Non-standard housing options require an additional fee that can be found in the program Dates and Fees.

Meals

Residence Hall (Standard Housing Non-Homestay and Select Housing): Meals are not included. Students can prepare their own meals in the fully furnished kitchen, which includes utensils and cleaning supplies. Students can also explore the myriads of restaurants in the areas surrounding the residence hall.  
Homestay: Students who live with homestay families receive two meals daily to be agreed upon with the host family (breakfast, lunch, or dinner). The third meal and/or any snacks are on the student. Students can make use of the kitchen space at the homestay and families will provide a cabinet or storage area to store their food, ingredients, etc.

Transportation

Commute times in São Paulo can vary considerably. Although distances may appear short in kilometers or miles, heavy traffic and the scale of the city mean that travel by public transportation can take significantly longer than expected.

Students choosing a homestay should be aware that placements may be up to 60 minutes from the CIEE Center, and commuting time can vary depending on the time of day, traffic conditions, and transit connections. Residence halls in Paulista and Jardins are within walking distance—about 25 minutes on average, to CIEE Center—offering a more predictable daily route.

Arizona State University (ASU): Brought to you by CIEE in partnership with ASU, enhance your international coursework with online classes that align with your degree requirements. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 6-week sessions that fit within the CIEE academic calendar.

On-Program Requirements

Academic Culture

CIEE courses typically run from Monday through Thursday, providing students with a concentrated schedule that allows for intensive study and exploration. This condensed format encourages students to fully engage with the material and make the most of their time. 

In addition to lectures, CIEE courses often incorporate local co-curricular activities, providing students with firsthand exposure to the rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes. These experiences not only enhance academic learning but also foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of the local context. 

Attendance is considered mandatory in CIEE courses. This emphasizes the importance of active participation and engagement in the learning process, encouraging students to fully commit to their academic pursuits. 

ASU Courses: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

Students participate in a 6-week CIEE part-time in-person internship and academic course, featuring both in-person class sessions and online asynchronous work. Class sessions, co-curricular excursions, and work hours may be scheduled Monday through Friday, and attendance is strictly enforced for all. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel away from the city during the work week. Instruction is supported and augmented online by CIEE’s learning management system, Canvas. 

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 6-weeks long in the summer, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end.

Grading

CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on attendance, class engagement, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi. The embedded internship course will be assessed in assignments and activities, completion of 100-120 internship hours, and feedback from the internship supervisor. 

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for CIEE students.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for CIEE courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and CIEE staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.
