Your Destination
Santiago is the capital of and largest city in Chile, as well as one of the largest cities in Latin America. Situated in the country’s central valley, Santiago hosts more than seven million residents. Downtown Santiago features 19th-century neoclassical architecture and winding side streets dotted by art deco and neo-gothic architecture. The cityscape is shaped by several stand-alone hills and the fast-flowing Mapocho River, lined by beautiful parks like Parque Forestal and Parque de las Esculturas. The magnificent Andes can be admired from many points in the city.
CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Santiago.
The Culture
Excursions & Activities
- Immerse yourself in Chilean history and arts through our cultural activities such as visits to museums, craft fairs, and historic neighborhoods recognized as landmarks of the city of Santiago.
- Taste Chilean and Latin American street food: the delicious and filling completos and sopaipillas, along with the newly arrived arepas, tequeños and Chilean hand-rolls.
- Become a local! Join your hosts at weekend barbeques and at Chilean tea times called “la once” with relatives and family-friends.
- Experience Chilean culture with CIEE coordinated cultural and co-curricular activities which include workshops, cultural outings, site-visits, peer-time, among others.
Projects
- Volunteer Opportunities: Give back and create a deeper connection to Santiago. Students can volunteer at local NGOs to support social policy, community service, human rights, environmental causes, and education. Students interested in one of the following Academic Projects must submit additional materials as part of their course selection:
- Internships: build new skills and intercultural competence through the CIEE academic Internship in your area of study and become an active member of Santiago’s professional environment.
- Research: Pursue a research project of your own design incorporating independent and local fieldwork.
- Service-Learning: Combine course-based learning with practical, relevant project experience to meet a community-defined need.

Housing & Meals
Housing
CIEE Santiago offers diverse housing options to ensure you're comfortable in your home away from home. From homestays to residence halls, we will strive for your accommodation preferences to be met. Homestays are ideal for students who wish to experience living with local families in apartments or houses. CIEE Santiago also offers non-homestay accommodations in residence halls for students who which to live with other Chilean and international students.
Standard Housing:
- Homestays: Includes a private room (single or double placement with another CIEE student) in the residence of a host family. Homestays feature weekly laundry, Wi-Fi, and two meals per day. Homestays are nearby subway stations and public transportation, coffee shops, convenience stores, and ATMs are available in metro stations, restaurants, and other amenities.
- Residence Halls: Includes a triple or double room in a residence hall, located within 30 - 40 minutes from CIEE Santiago de Chile. Students can prepare their meals in the facility and access study areas and other amenities. This type of accommodation offers fully furnished kitchen space, laundry facilities shared with other students, shared bathrooms, and WiFi. Meals are not included.
Select Housing: Includes a single room in a residence hall. Residence halls are located five minutes (on foot) from a subway station that connects with the rest of Santiago (30-minute commute to CIEE Santiago de Chile). Students can prepare their meals in the facility and access study areas and other amenities. This type of accommodation offers fully furnished kitchen space, laundry facilities shared with other students, shared bathrooms, and Wi-fi. Meals are not included. There is a monthly fee for utilities associated with this option paid locally.
A note: Housing is on a first-come, first-served basis. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we’ll let you know before you arrive.
Meals
Residence Hall (Standard housing non-homestay and Select housing): Meals are not included. Students can prepare their own meals in the fully furnished kitchen, which includes utensils and cleaning supplies. Students can also explore the myriad restaurants in the areas surrounding the residence hall.
Homestay: Students who live with homestay families receive two meals daily to be agreed upon with the host family (breakfast, lunch, or dinner). The third meal and/or any snacks are on the student. Students can make use of the kitchen space at the homestay and families will provide a cabinet or storage area to store their food, ingredients, etc.
Academics
Students enroll in one, two, or three six-week blocks, taking two courses during each block. This program gives students the flexibility to stay in Santiago the entire time or spend other blocks in other CIEE Open Campus Block program locations in Berlin, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Dublin, Kyoto, London, Madrid, Monteverde, Paris, Rome, Shanghai, Sydney, and Yucatan.
This program offers students a series of courses designed to help students explore the dynamics of this Latin American nation and its culture. Students may select one of seven academic tracks: Art and Architecture; Business; Communications, Journalism, and New Media; Global and Community Health; International Relations and Political Science; Language, Literature, and Culture; or STEM and Society.
Courses are taught in English, by CIEE local faculty; Spanish language classes are available at different levels.

Course Notes
- Courses are listed below by block and track; course list subject to change. Courses are in English unless otherwise noted. “GI” denotes courses that are offered at multiple CIEE locations.
- Use the Course Comparison Tool to compare classes offered across all Open Campus Block programs for each block.
- Students studying for three blocks who wish to complete a lab course will be required to opt out of one course to remain within the program credit range.
- Many CIEE courses are available in multiple CIEE locations. To help ensure you are able to enroll in the courses you need, some courses may be facilitated as a Hybrid course by an instructor from a location that is separate from your own. In a Hybrid course, you will learn either face-to-face or online, depending on your location. However, regardless of your location, you will apply what you learn from the instructor and course materials in your location. Hybrid courses can be identified in the course list as those whose course codes end in “CIEE” – open the syllabus to see the instruction location, if known.
Academic Projects
- Academic Projects will be offered onsite (either in-person or remotely) or remotely from another Open Campus location, dependent on availability and in compliance with local health and safety regulations.
- Academic Project placement will be designed based on the student’s project learning goals, qualifications, resume, and availability of placements in location or within the Open Campus Block network, either in-person or remotely. The process is highly individualized and goal oriented. Students enrolled in an Academic Project will receive additional academic support that informs and enhances the placement experience.
- Students applying for an Academic Project are required to submit additional materials during the course selection process.
Language Classes
- During course selection, students interested in a Spanish language course will be instructed to take an online Spanish language assessment to determine their proficiency level. Enrollment will be finalized on site and is based on assessment outcomes.
- Students may add the non-credit “Survival Spanish” course to their course load during the on-site orientation.
