Overview

South America's sixth largest city and alone hosts roughly half of the total population of Chile. Boasting world-class cuisine, exotic suburban areas, and prominent neoclassical architecture, Santiago is an incredible location to spend one six-week block (or up to three blocks) of our Open Campus Block program. When class is in session, you'll learn from our expert faculty in a wide range of subject areas. Outside the classroom, you'll discover the wonder of Santiago firsthand by exploring the city's many cafés, restaurants, shops, and beautifully restored neoclassical palaces.

BUILD YOUR STUDY ABROAD ADVENTURE

Designed for students who require a flexible study abroad experience, CIEE's Open Campus Block program was thoughtfully structured to be completely customizable. Select one, two, or three six-week blocks per term at any CIEE Open Campus Block location.

Your Destination

Santiago is the capital of and largest city in Chile, as well as one of the largest cities in Latin America. Situated in the country’s central valley, Santiago hosts more than seven million residents.  Downtown Santiago features 19th-century neoclassical architecture and winding side streets dotted by art deco and neo-gothic architecture. The cityscape is shaped by several stand-alone hills and the fast-flowing Mapocho River, lined by beautiful parks like Parque Forestal and Parque de las Esculturas. The magnificent Andes can be admired from many points in the city.

CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Santiago.

  • Become a local! Join your hosts at weekend barbeques and at Chilean tea times called “la once” with relatives and family-friends.
  • Experience Chilean culture with CIEE coordinated cultural and co-curricular activities which include workshops, cultural outings, site-visits, peer-time, among others.

Projects

  • Volunteer Opportunities: Give back and create a deeper connection to Santiago.  Students can volunteer at local NGOs to support social policy, community service, human rights, environmental causes, and education. Students interested in one of the following Academic Projects must submit additional materials as part of their course selection:
  • Internships: build new skills and intercultural competence through the CIEE academic Internship in your area of study and become an active member of Santiago’s professional environment.
  • Research: Pursue a research project of your own design incorporating independent and local fieldwork.
  • Service-Learning: Combine course-based learning with practical, relevant project experience to meet a community-defined need.

Academic Culture

Each course is a full semester in content, so the pace is accelerated, and the workload is demanding. CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel out of Santiago when classes are in session and plan trips for the long weekends in between blocks.

Class Format

Courses taught at the CIEE Santiago are typically for CIEE students only. Classes are scheduled Monday-Thursday and meet either two, three, or four times per week, and attendance is strictly enforced both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Students should expect an average of two hours of preparation required for each hour in class. Instruction is supported and augmented online by our learning management system, Canvas.  Some courses may be facilitated as a Hybrid course by an instructor from a location that is separate from your own. In a Hybrid course, you will learn either face-to-face or online, depending on your location.

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students are graded on the basis of attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for CIEE courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors.
