Situated on a long, narrow strip of land in southern Latin America, Chile’s unique geography in the Pacific Ocean has given birth to a distinct landscape, culture, economy, and mode of living. Chile’s versatile and vibrant capital, Santiago, is one of the country’s most incredible cities. Nestled in a bowl-shaped valley encircled by the towering Andes mountains and the Cordillera de la Costa range, Santiago provides the ideal setting for exciting outdoor adventures, such as hiking, skiing, and traditional kite-flying.
In addition to its long-standing reputation of satisfying the appetites of outdoor enthusiasts, Santiago boasts a lively, urban cosmopolitan center. Roughly half of the total population of Chile call Santiago home and this capital city is rapidly becoming more diverse as a result of large influxes of migrants relocating here. The Culture
Featured Excursions & Tours
At CIEE Santiago, we organize carefully planned day-trips (two per term) and a multi-day study tour (one per term) to help you explore and enhance your understanding of Chile’s diverse location.
Past day-trips have included site visits to nearby towns and cities such as Curacavà and Pomaire, two enchanting, rural towns in the Coast Range, known for their traditional handcrafts and Chilean cuisine; Isla Negra and Algarrobo, two friendly beach towns, one of them, home to Nobel Laureate poet Pablo Neruda; and the classic Viña del Mar and ValparaÃso, colorful cities with a lively cultural scene. Other fascinating destinations include Sewell Mining town, Cajón del Maipo, and La Campana National Park, among others.
Multi-day study tours are designed to help you explore an area of our country in greater depth, whether in the north or the south. Previous excursions have taken place in Chiloé Island, the very starting point of the Chilean Patagonia; Araucania, with its marvelous forest, lakes and Volcanoes; and the Atacama region, home to living pre-Columbian communities and the driest desert in the world!

Each CIEE program has frequent cultural excursions and tours uniquely designed to complement the program’s academics and enhance cultural immersion. In Santiago, students might:

HOUSING
Homestays: All students live with CIEE homestay families. Living with a Chilean family is your ticket to integration into life in Santiago de Chile, as it provides an excellent opportunity for immersion into the local culture. Our families come in all shapes and sizes, from married couples with college-aged children, to retired single mothers, with or without pets, living in apartments or houses. All are carefully screened and vetted by our onsite staff. They are composed of welcoming, dedicated people who are thrilled to learn about you while also sharing about themselves!
You may be single-placed in a host family home or with a CIEE partner in a double placement. Whichever way, you will be provided with a single room, laundry once a week, Wi-Fi, and a copy of the house keys. You will be close to subway stations and public transportation, coffee shops, convenience stores, ATMs available in metro stations, restaurants, and other amenities.
Students who are staying for a full year are responsible for their own housing and meals during breaks between semesters. -
MEALS
Homestays include two meals per day to be agreed upon with your host family (breakfast, lunch, or dinner).
Students are responsible for the remaining meal, either preparing it at home or eating out in one of many restaurants and cafés in the city. Students who are staying for a full year are responsible for their meals during breaks between semesters.

Founded in 1992, this program is designed to support students with fluency in Spanish language skills as they further their studies by enrolling directly in courses at three of Latin America’s and Chile’s top universities – Universidad de Chile, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and Universidad Diego Portales.  All courses are taught in Spanish by faculty with PhDs.

Students enroll in 4-6 courses per semester, choosing from:
- CIEE elective courses and CIEE Spanish language courses.
- Host Institution courses at any of the following Chilean universities: Universidad de Chile, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and Universidad Diego Portales.

Academic Culture
Chilean academic culture differs from a traditional U.S. American academic culture; university professors in Chile do not have office hours although they can be reached by email, or students can set up an appointment with the professor according to the weekly schedule.  
CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards.  The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lectures and discussions with co-curricular activities.  Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation.  To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel out of Santiago during classes.
Class Format
Classes are taught in Spanish and scheduled Monday-Friday.  Attendance is strictly enforced both for classes and planned co-curricular and cultural activities.  Students should expect an average of two hours of preparation required for each hour in class.
CIEE courses are taught for CIEE students only.  They’re supported by our e-learning platform, Canvas.  At local universities, students take classes with Chilean students and other international students.  Professors are primarily Chilean with advanced degrees from universities from around the world, resulting in a variety of teaching styles and perspectives.
Grading
CIEE courses: The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students' grades are based on attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations.  Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.  University courses: Students meet the same expectations as their Chilean peers.  Assessment includes a variety of different types of evaluation, such as written and oral assignments, quizzes and a final paper or examination.  The Chilean grading scale runs from 1 to 7, which CIEE translates into recommended U.S. letter grade equivalents.  Graduating seniors and students with timing concerns should note that grades for Semester I (North American spring) should arrive on campus by late September, and grades for Semester II (North American fall) arrive by late March.

Natalia Castro holds a B.A. in English and a minor in International Business. Natalia has been part of CIEE Santiago and Valparaiso centers as an experienced facilitator of cultural activities and educational initiatives. She is currently a Programs Coordinator at CIEE Santiago in Chile. Natalia loves outdoor activities, biking, spending time with her family and friends, and reading Latin American literature.
