Rio de Janeiro is all about street life; the social and cultural life of the city is all out in the open. Rio is the third largest metropolitan area in South America and the most visited city in the southern hemisphere, known for its stunning natural beauty, Carnival celebrations, musical culture, and renowned beaches. Rio’s iconic landmarks include the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado Mountain, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and Maracanã stadium, one of the world's largest football stadiums.

What you need to know

The program details

During CIEE’s January in Rio de Janeiro, students will examine the philosophical foundations and basic principles of ethics as they apply to businesses and environments in which they operate. Real-world case studies will be used to provide students with insight into how businesses and organizations manage challenging ethical and moral dilemmas. Students also consider the particular responsibilities of business leaders in fostering ethnical awareness and practices within the corporate context. The course is taught in English by CIEE faculty.

  • Class Format

    Courses taught at the CIEE Global Institute are for CIEE students only. Courses are taught Monday – Friday. Instruction is supported and augmented online by our learning management system, Canvas.

  • Grading

    Assessment is based on the individual’s overall attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Students must check with their professors to find out exam and project presentation dates. Under no circumstances will CIEE alter deadlines or exam dates for study abroad students who have made conflicting travel plans. The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used.

  • Academic Culture

    The program is made up of three weeks of classes with an intensive orientation beforehand. CIEE classes are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. Each course is a full semester in content, so the pace is accelerated, and the workload is demanding. Class attendance is strictly enforced both for classes and required co-curricular excursions.


  • Overall GPA

    Students need to have a GPA of at least 2.5.

  • Total credit, 3 semester/4.5 quarter hours
  • Contact hours: 45

All students take the required course, Business Ethics and Leadership.
