With more than five million residents, it is Australia’s largest city and one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world, with more than 140 nationalities represented. Nearly one-third of its residents were born overseas, contributing to a vibrant mix of cultures, languages, and cuisines. 

Melbourne is also home to a wealth of iconic landmarks that offer a glimpse into the city’s rich history and vibrant culture. The Royal Botanic Gardens provides a serene escape with its stunning landscapes and diverse plant collections, while the Melbourne Cricket Ground is a must-visit for sports enthusiasts, showcasing the city’s deep love for cricket and Australian Rules Football. Federation Square, with its distinctive architecture, serves as a cultural hub featuring galleries, museums, and public events. The historic Queen Victoria Market offers a lively atmosphere with a variety of fresh produce, unique goods, and delicious street food. Additionally, the Skydeck on the 88th floor of the Eureka Tower offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city skyline and beyond, making it an unforgettable experience for students. Moreover, Melbourne boasts a vibrant lifestyle that appeals to visitors from all over the world. The city is famous for its café culture, with countless coffee shops and eateries offering delicious cuisine from every corner of the globe. Melbourne’s calendar is packed with exciting events, like hosting the Australian Open Tennis every January, huge lunar new year (and other multicultural festivals across the year), and a thriving live music scene, with numerous venues offering performances across various genres. The city has produced many famous bands and artists, and it continues to be a hotspot for emerging talent.  What’s more, winters offer a variety of cozy and adventurous activities. Enjoying a game of Aussie Rules Football at the MCG in winter is a must ice skating at Docklands or take a day trip to the snow-capped Mt. Donna Buang for skiing and snowboarding. The stunning rugged shipwreck coast is a blustery and beautiful backdrop for coastal walks. Average temperatures between June and August range from 42.8°F to 57.2°F, creating the perfect brisk atmosphere for outdoor fun and indoor relaxation. There's always something to do.

Students participating in the Summer in Melbourne program enroll in one 3-credit course per summer session, blending classroom instruction with enriching co-curricular excursions to Melbourne’s cultural institutions and organizations. Designed for students of all majors, the program offers an immersive opportunity to experience Melbourne’s cultural attractions while earning credits toward their degree. All courses are taught by CIEE instructors. CIEE faculty are familiar with the U.S. academic system and culture.

Academic Culture

Each course is a full semester in content, covered in four-weeks, so the pace is accelerated, and the workload is demanding. Courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel away from the city when classes are in session and plan trips for the weekends in between blocks.  

Class Format

Courses are typically for CIEE students only. Classes are scheduled Monday-Thursday and meet three or four times per week. Attendance is strictly enforced both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Students should expect an average of two hours of preparation required for each hour in class. Instruction is supported and augmented online with our learning management system, Canvas.     

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students are graded based on participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses. In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via CIEE's School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.

Program Fees

CIEE offers the most student support of any provider in its program fee, including an airport greeting, full-time leadership and support, orientation, cultural activities, local excursions, pre-departure advising, and CIEE iNext travel protection with benefits.

CIEE offers the most grants and scholarships of any study abroad organization, including $8 million/year in travel grants, merit-based scholarships, institutional and MSI grants, and Gilman Go Global Grants.

For students in homestays, families provide 2 meals a day. For students in residence halls, you should budget approx. $375 per month for groceries if you plan on making your own meals, and more if you plan on eating out regularly.
