The Destination
Founded in 1536, this bustling metropolis reveals its European influence everywhere you look. Buenos Aires is a vibrant port city and the world’s leading Spanish language publishing hub. Travelers enjoy world-class museums and restaurants, exceptional architecture, and a rousing nightlife. With weather that is pleasantly mild almost year-round, Buenos Aires is ready for exploration by bike, public transportation, or on foot - one of the many reasons it has been voted “the number-one city to visit” in Latin America.
CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Buenos Aires.

The Buenos Aires Open Campus Block Program is designed to help students explore the dynamics of this vibrant and beautiful city and culture. Students have access to a range of complementary co-curricular, personal, and professional development activities. Throughout the program, students will explore connections between business, social development, and culture. The goals of the curriculum are to promote cultural self-awareness, scientific and cultural literacy, and the ability to bridge cultural gaps. Through interactive activities and exercises, students are encouraged to consider issues of culture, identity, values, beliefs, and assumptions. Ultimately, students develop discipline-specific competencies so they can effectively incorporate new experiences into their general understanding of the natural environment, as well as local human culture.
Students can choose from a variety of disciplines within seven different tracks: Art and Architecture; Business; Communications, Journalism, and New Media; Global and Community Health; International Relations and Political Science; Language, Literature, and Culture; or STEM and Society in English. Courses are mostly taught in English by CIEE faculty; Spanish language classes are available at multiple different levels. There are no required courses and no prerequisites to participate, although upper-level courses will require previous coursework in related topics. Students enroll in one, two, or three six-week blocks, taking two courses during each block.
This program gives students the flexibility to stay in Buenos Aires the entire time or spend other blocks at our Open Campus Block locations in Berlin, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Dublin, Kyoto, London, Madrid, Monteverde, Paris, Rome, Santiago-CL, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney, and Yucatan.

Academic Culture
Each course is a full semester in content, so the pace is accelerated, and the workload is demanding. CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel out of Buenos Aires when classes are in session and plan trips for the long weekends in between blocks.
Class Format
Courses taught at CIEE Buenos Aires are for CIEE participants only. Classes are typically scheduled Monday through Thursday and meet either two, three, or four times per week. Attendance is strictly enforced for classes, co-curricular, and required cultural activities. Students should expect an average of two hours of preparation required for each hour in class. Instruction is supported and augmented online by our learning management system, Canvas.
Some courses may be facilitated as a Hybrid course by an instructor from a location that is separate from your own. In a Hybrid course, you will learn either face-to-face or online, depending on your location.
Grading
The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students’ grades are based on attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

Hybrid courses can be identified in the course list as those whose course codes end in “CIEE”, and the title will include the location of instruction. Regardless of your location, you will apply what you learn from the instructor and course materials in your location. Co-curricular activities are tailored to each student’s location to promote local, experiential, and intercultural learning for all.
