Your Destination
Have your pick of shops, vibrant neighborhoods, theaters, and cafes in “the Paris of South America”. The city earned its nickname thanks to its stately architecture and a steady influx of European immigrants, giving visitors glimpses of Europe through architecture and neighborhood life. A vibrant port city, Buenos Aires is also the world’s leading Spanish language publishing center. With a population of 13 million, it has the cultural intrigue found only in cities of this size and prestige.
CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Buenos Aires.

HOUSING
Homestay: Experience real, day-to-day life in Buenos Aires by living with an Argentine host family. Host options may be traditional or non-traditional, including families with young children, single professionals, young couples with no children, and older couples whose children visit but do not live at home. We match as much as possible family hosts to student preferences. Each homestay has at least one person that can speak English. The typical commute between homestays and CIEE Buenos Aires can range from a 15-minute walk to a 30-minute public transportation ride. Homestays include a weekly laundry service.
-
MEALS
Local homestays include two meals per day: breakfast and either lunch or dinner. Host families and students arrange their own meal schedules. Students are responsible for the remaining meal, either preparing them at home or eating in one of many restaurants and cafés throughout the city.
*As long as the local health and safety regulations permit, students will stay in Homestays following new CIEE Health Guidelines. In case students cannot stay in Homestays as usually done, Apartments will be arranged for students. Apartments are located in a safe residential area, close to markets, shops, restaurants, and public transportation. These are furnished for single or double occupancy and are located within walking distance from the CIEE Buenos Aires. Meals are not included in Apartment stays.

Academic Culture
The U.S. and Argentine educational systems have significant differences. Argentine students follow specialized paths of study to gain expertise in one field. Courses tend to be more difficult, and students are expected to take greater initiative and responsibility for learning and completing assignments. Students must take exams within the official dates of the program. The academic year program roughly coincides with the U.S. academic year, from July to July; students have a three-month break (December – February) between semesters. The calendar year program runs from mid-February to mid-December; students have a one-week break between the first and second semester in July.
Class Format
CIEE classes are only for CIEE students and are organized like those at most U.S. institutions. Local university classes are open to Argentines and other international students. Each university has a particular class size, campus look and feel, and attracts students of different socio-demographic backgrounds. UBA classes meet for four to six hours a week, with class time divided between lectures and smaller discussion workshops; UCA classes range from four to six hours per week; and UNA classes size varies per department from small to large seminars.
Grading
CIEE courses use the U.S. A-F grading scale. Students’ grades are based on attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.
Courses at UBA, UCA, and UNA are graded numerically on a scale of 1-10, which CIEE converts to recommended U.S. letter grade equivalents, and most classes have written exams and occasionally a final oral exam, based on an extensive reading list and formal class lectures.
Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for CIEE courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors.
