A Weekend in Seoul: Pajeon and Makgeoli, Gyeongbokgung, Yukhoe

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of delving into the heart of Seoul, embracing its rich culture, delectable cuisine, and historical landmarks. Join me as I recount my weekend adventure, filled with savory delights and enchanting sights.

Saturday Evening: Pajeon and Makgeoli on a Rainy Evening

As the rain drizzled down on Saturday evening, I found myself wandering through the charming streets of Seongsu-dong, a neighborhood known for its artistic flair and trendy cafes. Seeking refuge from the rain, I stumbled upon a cozy eatery serving traditional Korean pancakes, or pajeon, paired with refreshing makgeoli, a traditional rice wine.

The warmth of the restaurant enveloped me as I settled in, eager to indulge in this quintessential Korean comfort food. The pajeon arrived sizzling hot, adorned with an array of fresh vegetables and succulent seafood, perfectly complemented by the crisp, golden exterior. With each bite, I savored the harmonious blend of flavors, the perfect antidote to the chilly evening. Washed down with a glass of makgeoli, lightly effervescent and slightly sweet, it was a truly delightful culinary experience.

Sunday Afternoon: Hanbok and Gyeongbokgung Palace

Embracing the opportunity to immerse myself in Korea's rich history, I ventured to Gyeongbokgung Palace, donning a traditional hanbok for the occasion. Adorned in vibrant hues and intricate designs, the hanbok added an extra layer of magic to the experience, transporting me back in time to the majestic Joseon era.

As I wandered through the palace grounds, I marveled at the grandeur of the architecture and the beauty of the meticulously landscaped gardens. With each step, I felt a profound sense of awe and reverence for the rich cultural heritage preserved within these ancient walls.

Sunday Evening: Yukhoe and Friendship

After a day of exploration, my friend and I worked up quite an appetite. Eager to continue our culinary journey, we sought out a traditional Korean restaurant specializing in yukhoe in Gwangjang Market, a savory beef tartare dish. The sleek, modern interior provided a stark contrast to the historical backdrop of Gyeongbokgung Palace, yet both experiences were equally enriching.

As we savored each bite of the delicately seasoned yukhoe, accompanied by an assortment of banchan (side dishes), we reminisced about our day spent in awe of Seoul's beauty and history. 

My weekend in Seoul was a testament to the city's vibrant spirit and rich cultural tapestry. From indulging in traditional Korean cuisine to exploring historical landmarks, every moment was a celebration of the beauty and diversity of this dynamic city. As I bid farewell to Seoul, I carry with me fond memories of laughter, friendship, and the warmth of a rainy weekend spent in the heart of South Korea.
