Study Abroad and Mental Health

By: Olivia Hegerfeld

Embarking on a study abroad journey is an exhilarating experience that promises personal growth, cultural enrichment, and academic exploration. However, amidst the excitement, it's crucial to acknowledge the potential impact on mental health. Moving to a new country, adapting to a different culture, and facing the challenges of academia in an unfamiliar environment can be overwhelming. In this blog post, we’ll discuss the intersection of study abroad and mental health, offering insights and tips to ensure a fulfilling and mentally resilient international study experience.

While abroad, establishing a social support system in a new environment takes time. Feelings of isolation can contribute to mental health challenges. One thing that I found helpful was to actively participate in social events, join clubs or organizations, and reach out to fellow students to help build a sense of community. One specific tip I have is to just say ‘yes.’. It's easy to just stick to doing things that are in your comfort zone, but try to not worry so much about all the logistics and just say ‘yes’ to people.

It is important to build connections with fellow students, locals, and classmates. Engaging in social activities, joining clubs, and attending cultural events can create a sense of belonging and support. Most likely other students are feeling the same way that you do. I personally found a lot of comfort in doing activities that I would normally do back home such as farmers markets, theme parks, hiking, or even just going on drives to the beach. One tip is that you don't always have to be doing something crazy and touristy to fill your time, it's ok to have days where you just do simple activities.

Cultivate a routine that includes self-care activities such as exercise, adequate sleep, and healthy eating. Most housing will have gym units and comfortable amenities that will mock your normal lifestyles back home. These practices contribute to physical well-being and positively impact mental health. Another key idea is mindfulness techniques, such as meditation and deep breathing exercises, can help manage stress and anxiety. Incorporating mindfulness into daily life can enhance overall well-being.

Don't forget though that If the challenges become overwhelming, don't hesitate to seek help. CIEE offers counseling services for international students. Professional support can provide valuable tools to cope with stressors and navigate the emotional aspects of studying abroad.
