CIEE Palma

One of the best things about being an exchange student in Palma de Mallorca is having the opportunity to explore outside of the city itself. While Palma boasts incredible architecture, rich culture, and beachy charm, the rest of the island is full of secret gems waiting to be found. Whether you love nature, history, or simply a beach day, there is no lack of weekend getaway trips that add some extra fun to your study abroad experience. Below are some of the most popular day trips and tours that you won't want to miss.

Sóller and Port de Sóller
One of the most traditional favorites among students, the town of Sóller is an absolute must-see. The ride itself—on a wooden train that snakes through the Serra de Tramuntana mountains—is an experience. Once in Sóller, visit the picturesque town square, have an orange ice cream (a specialty), and shop and gallery hop in local boutiques. Then take a historic tram ride down to Port de Sóller, a pretty port village with peaceful beaches and relaxing promenade perfect for lunch or a sunset walk.

Valldemossa
Just 30 minutes outside Palma, Valldemossa is a peaceful mountain town renowned for its cobbled streets, gardens, and artistic past. The Royal Charterhouse, where composer Frédéric Chopin once lived, is a glimpse into the island's cultural history. Don't miss trying the local favorite pastry, coca de patata. With its relaxed ambiance and natural beauty, Valldemossa is ideal for a peaceful, reflective day out.

Alcúdia and Playa de Muro
For a mix of history and sun, and beach, Alcúdia is the place to go. Walk through the medieval old town, the ancient city walls, or to the nearby Roman ruins at Pollentia. Then head to Playa de Muro, a stunning beach with silky sand and aqua water—perfect for a dip or just lounging in the sun.

Cuevas del Drach (Dragon Caves)
For a braver weekend excursion, visit the Cuevas del Drach in Porto Cristo. The underwater caves house one of Europe's largest lakes underground. It winds its way through stunning rock structures and ends with a short classical concert performed within the cave—a special treat on the island.

Day Trip Tips for Success
To make the most of your weekend excursions, it is important to prepare. Verify schedules of public transportation in advance and reserve any required tickets ahead of time, particularly for fast-paced routes. Bring light but intelligent—water, snacks, sunscreen, and good walking shoes to maintain energy levels throughout the day. Using a group of peers as travel companions can add to the fun and prevent individuals from getting lost or missing in the crowd. Finally, respect local peoples and places by respecting local mores, not littering, and being careful with historical and natural sites. A little preparation can make a big difference in ensuring your weekend trips proceed without a hitch, are pleasant, and are memorable.

Weekends in Mallorca are the perfect chance to get more from your study abroad experience than from a classroom alone. Whether you're hiking mountain trails, strolling medieval streets, or soaking up world-class beaches, there is something for every student type. With forethought and a spirit of adventure, you can turn every weekend into a highlight of your Palma stay.
