When traveling to a foreign country for the first time, it’s perfectly normal to seek out and be comforted by familiar signs of home. Have no fear – the major cities in Latin America have Starbucks, Subway, McDonalds, diet soda, French fries, wi-fi, mass transit, and many other modern conveniences we’ve grown attached to in the U.S.

But there are a few things in Latin America that are unique to the region. My guess is - in just a matter of time - you’ll grow to adore these cultural twists and yearn to bring them with you upon your return to the U.S.

  1. The Latin American Greeting always comes with a kiss on the cheek. Forget the handshake – it’s wicked unsanitary. Accept the greeting with a smile and you’ll instantly feel warmly welcomed.

  2. The Latin American Market isn’t stocked with a mind-boggling selection of brands and flavors in every shape and size. They offer the basics – which takes a lot of the stressful decision-making out of the simple act of buying groceries.

  3. The Latin American Midday Meal is a feast. Generally served between 1-3 pm, this leisurely meal of bread, vegetables, meats, fish, and cheese, is the time to consume the majority of your daily calories. In turn, you have plenty of time to burn them off before you retire for the day.

This is just a glimpse of the many wonderful aspects of the Latin culture. Study abroad in this incredible region and live, learn, and explore!
