Cantonese

Cantonese is a language I find comfort in because it reminds me of home. I grew up speaking Cantonese with my grandparents and parents and honestly, I think it might have been my first language. So anytime I find people who do speak Cantonese I get super excited. It is a feeling I can't quite describe other than home. Which is why I wrote this post dedicated to the Cantonese people I met in YES (Yonsei English Society).

YES Club!

If you're looking for a club to join at Yonsei University, I highly recommend the YES club. This club is dedicated to fostering friendships between exchange students and current Korean students through fun social events and small group hangouts. I have met some of the best people through this club and it is how I found my Canto Gang.

How It Started:

Literally, I kid you not, we were at orientation dinner for the YES club and most of us happened to have sat at the same table. We somehow identified each other and started speaking Cantonese. "干杯" we all cheered and that's how the group formed. It started with only five of us and now we are at eight. Crazy how language and culture can so easily bring people together.

What We Do:

We eat and speak Cantonese, that's what we do. As simple as it sounds, we just find Hong Kong or Chinese restaurants in Seoul, and we eat together. We spit out some Cantonese here and there and share dishes that we all grew up eating. It's weird to say but I feel like I am the most authentic and crazy me when I am with them. So thank you Canto Gang for making my experience here even more memorable. Looking forward to even more dim sim and Chinese food runs with yall!
