HSSA Leadership and Service in Public Health Experience
We often hear phrases, “When an opportunity presents itself, take it” but what happens when there are a vast majority of opportunities to choose from? The short answer is to follow your heart and this year, Summer 2025, I did just that. I had the honor to travel to Gaborone, Botswana and study leadership service and public health amongst many like-minded students. The journey was phenomenal. Upon arrival I was greeted by some of the most genuine souls I’d ever encountered. From there, my new normal began; It was quite the adjustment but one worth the experience. From trips to the University of Botswana, local cafe shops, villages and so much more; These places began to feel like home while I was away from mine. My favorite memories came from the interactions with the people of Botswana (Tswana). Specifically, visiting a village in the Okavango Delta.
“Fumbitira” which translates to “hold your culture”.
Coming from a family that deeply cherishes our culture, this saying was familiar and comforted me. In many ways it reconnected me to my roots even while being thousands of miles away. I came to realize that although our worlds had never intertwined, we shared more than what we knew. Adventure, curiosity, and a love for life had connected us. Botswana gave me more than an education, it offered me a new perspective of people, myself, and new friends. I learned to dance in my happiest moments, sing freely, and live fully like no tomorrow. Gaborone taught me to lead with a tender heart, show kindness to strangers, and treat everyone as family. Now I return home with stories to tell. But more than that, I have a future worth fighting for and lives I’m committed to impacting.
Warm regards,
Aniuas Sanchez.
