Overview

Your CIEE Semester Intern + Study Abroad program in Osaka pairs hands‑on professional experience with academic study in one of Japan’s most socially connected and commercially active cities. This program includes three components: A part-time internship with an international organization (approximately 20 hours per week), an internship seminar, and two elective courses taught by CIEE faculty or online through CIEE’s global academic partner, ASU. You’ll enrich your time in Osaka through co‑curricular and extracurricular experiences such as spending a day at Universal Studios Japan alongside local students, exploring the lantern‑lit streets and temples of Hozenji Yokocho, or joining hands‑on cultural workshops that highlight everyday Japanese customs and food culture. You’ll leave with practical skills, global perspective, and memorable experiences rooted in daily life in Osaka. 

Unique Experiences

at an Osaka‑based manufacturer, learning about quality control, supply chains, and modern industrial processes

CIEE’s excursions and cultural activities in Osaka will open doors for you to explore Japan's rich diversity, language, culture, history, and timeless beauty in ways that will enhance your time abroad.

  • Visit Nara Deer Park and Tōdai‑ji to see the world’s largest bronze Buddha and interact with the sacred deer that roam freely around the historic temple grounds 
  • Walk through a life-sized recreation of Edo‑period Osaka, exploring how daily life and the city’s streetscapes have evolved over centuries 
  • Witness Japan’s national sport by attending a live sumo tournament or a morning training session at a local stable, exploring the power, ritual, and tradition of sumo

Language Classes 

  • Students interested in a non-introductory language course will be required to take a language assessment to determine their proficiency level. Enrollment will be finalized on-site and is based on assessment outcomes.
