FAQs
TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. It is the practice of teaching English to students who are not native speakers. TEFL teachers can work in a variety of settings, including language schools, private schools, public schools, and online platforms.
To be eligible for a CIEE TEFL courses, you must:
- Be a native English speaker or have an advanced level of English proficiency equivalent to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) C1 level or higher. Nonnative English speakers must submit proof of their English proficiency.
- Be at least 18 years of age or older.
- Have strong reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills.
- Be able to use a personal computer and have consistent access to the internet.
Please note that there are additional eligibility requirements for each of the CIEE TEFL job placement opportunities as well as the CIEE Teach Abroad programs.
For those just getting started on their TEFL journey, we recommend the 150-Hour TEFL Certificate course. This is CIEE's flagship course and is the most comprehensive option. It is ideal for anyone who wants to become a fully qualified TEFL teacher and is considering teaching English abroad or online. The course includes 130 hours of online coursework, a 20-hour practicum, and lifetime job placement assistance.
There are a few different ways to get a TEFL job. The most common way is to complete a TEFL course and then apply for jobs online or through recruitment agencies. Investing in a course that provides comprehensive job placement support can significantly enhance your chances of success. For example, CIEE TEFL offers lifetime job search assistance to students and alumni that includes online TEFL job resources, 1:1 coaching with CIEE TEFL advisors, and job placement opportunities with partner institutions in various countries around the world.
Please note that CIEE TEFL is a course provider and is not an employment agency. If you are already TEFL certified and are not willing to acquire a TEFL certification through CIEE TEFL, we are unable to assist you in the job search process.
The requirements for a TEFL job will vary depending on the employer and the location. However, a TEFL certificate is the most common requirement. Other common requirements include a bachelor's degree, a high level of English proficiency, citizenship from an English speaking country, and experience working with diverse populations.
