How to Find A Practicum Location

Completing your practicum hours may feel like the most daunting part of becoming TEFL certified, but it’s actually one of the most useful elements of the course! During your practicum hours, you’ll have the opportunity to practice everything you’ve learned in your TEFL training before you start your new teaching position. This way, you’ll be fully prepared to start your new role!

The question is, how are you going to do it?

Keep reading to learn some tips and tricks on how to find your practicum location!

How do I find a practicum location?

Here, you have quite a few options. You may not know it, but there are plenty of opportunities to teach and learn right in your community! Its best to start with a basic Google search, you might get more results than you think. Play around with search terms such as:

“ESL Classes in___”, “English community outreach programs in____”, or “Adult Literacy Centers in ____”.

Whether you know it or not, there are opportunities right in your community! It might take a little bit of digging, but your practicum location is out there.

Where do I find a practicum location?

There are many different kinds of places where practicum hours can be completed, it doesn’t just have to be a traditional school setting like you might be used to. Some suggested locations to look out for are as follows:

  • Community Churches
  • Community Literacy Center
  • Community Outreach Center
  • Immigrant and Refugee Services
  • Intensive English Program Center
  • Language Academy
  • Local Library

Don’t forget, many TEFL students have completed their practicum before you! So many, that we made a map! If they can find a location to complete their practicum then so can you!
