Since 1997, CIEE has been sending university graduates abroad to Teach English in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. As a result, we have come to understand that true success teaching English only comes from a deep sense of readiness before you embark.

Decades of experiencing the unique challenges of teaching English abroad led us to believe that—simply put—there was a better way to TEFL. So we designed one.

Annette started her ELT career in 2005 when she received my TESOL certificate with distinction. Since then, she has taught in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where she worked with mainland Chinese students who wished to enter the Technological University and Chinese students ages 7-27 at all levels of abilities, in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she worked with refugees to help them communicate effectively in their new home, and in Puerto JImenéz, Costa Rica, where she taught grades 2-6 at the Corcovado bilingual school and began teaching online. Since that time, Annette has worked with students from more than 30 countries, teaching Business English, ESP, general English, and exam English. Now, more than 30,000 hours of ELT experience later, she’s back in the U.S. after 3 years in Merida, Mexico, and is writing scripts and doing video English lessons for a YouTube ESL channel, giving trial lessons and writing content for a startup virtual language company, working with a corporate relocation company, and tutoring for CIEE's online TEFL course.

Karen Corne, DELTA (level 7) certified, Tutor

Karen is an experienced English as a Foreign Language (EFL) professional holding a Trinity TESOL certificate, a Cambridge DELTA and a PTLLS certificate. Since starting her EFL career in Taiwan in 2001, she has gained valuable experience teaching students of all ages. Karen taught General English, Business English, English for Academic Purposes, English for Specific Purposes, English for Exams, and TEFL teacher training, and recently have become an examiner for IELTS. Besides teaching, Karen also worked as an academic manager for projects run by international education providers, such as Babcock International for the British Royal Navy, as well as smaller language schools in the United Kingdom and Taiwan. Since 2005, she has written materials for language schools in Taiwan, the U.K, Spain, and for the Montessori Methodology in Language Training Project. Some more recent materials have been for e-learning courses, as well as synchronous training. Karen has extensive experience developing ICT materials and delivering them online.

Niamh Trundle, Currently completing a MA in TESOL/Applied Linguistics, Tutor

Niamh /nɪːv/, which rhymes with 'leave,' is Irish, and her name is Gaelic. She has extensive international experience as a TEFL teacher and teacher-trainer and lived and taught in Mongolia, Spain, Peru, Indonesia, and the Czech Republic. Niamh is currently an English lecturer at a university in Canterbury, where she also designs courses and syllabi for EAP, IELTS, and Cambridge exam courses and works as a content developer, writing material for TEFL teachers and students. In her free time, she loves to new languages and enjoy a good book.

Cora Higgins, MA in Education, Tutor

Cora has been teaching ESL for 15 years and teacher training for 10. Her classroom adventures have taken her to little surf towns in Latin America, bustling cities in Asia and Europe, and her own hometown of Boston, Massachusetts. Cora has taught children, corporate executives, university students, and even a couple of pop stars! Teaching online is another way of reaching out to new students, trying new methods, and expanding her own knowledge along the way, which is one of the reasons she’s so excited to be tutoring for the CIEE TEFL course.

Lynn Zimmerman, MA in TESOL and a PhD in Curriculum & Teaching, Tutor

Lynn’s TEFL career began in 1992 when she served in Poland for two years as a Peace Corps volunteer and taught high school students in grades 10-12. She stayed in Poland after her Peace Corps experience and taught at English immersion summer camps for high school students, and two Polish universities - first teaching English to teaching majors at one university, then teaching Intercultural Communication to translation majors at another Polish university for several semesters. During academic year 2014-2015, Lynn was as an English Language Fellow in Albania teaching English teaching majors. In Fall 2015 she was a Fulbright Scholar Belarus where she taught university students studying to be English teachers. Then for the 2nd half of her Fulbright, she went to Chisinau, Moldova in Spring 2016 where she taught Intercultural Communication courses to translation majors.

Luba Diasamidze, PhD in Comparative Linguistics, Tutor

Luba started her ESL career almost 10 years ago, and has extensive experience in the world of ELT as a teacher, teacher trainer, material designer, ESL supervisor and manager. She holds a Cambridge DELTA and a PhD in Comparative Linguistics. While undertaking a PhD, she also worked as an Assistant Professor at university and did research on language and gender. After earning her degree, Luba moved to China and continued working in the ESL industry. Luba is very interested in languages and at certain points of her life, had learned seven different languages.

Kim Perkins, MA in TEAP, Tutor

Originally from the UK and South Africa, Kim is currently in Boston, Massachusetts, where she teachs EAP and Writing for Mass Communication at Boston University. Kim is also the department's Academic Materials Coordinator, which gives her the unique opportunity to preview the latest offerings from ESL publishers and to assist faculty in selecting the department’s textbooks. Kim began her TEFL life, as many do, while living abroad: in bella Italia to be precise. She has a MA in TEAP from Nottingham University as well as the Cambridge DELTA. Prior to joining Boston University, Kim was an ESL program manager and also TEFL trainer for a language school in Boston. She is excited to return to the teacher training side of the TESL/TEFL equation!

Susan Berry, MA in TESOL, Tutor

Susan has worked in international multicultural education for over 20 years starting as a Peace Corps volunteer in Niger, West Africa. Following these two years of service, she earned my MA in TESOL at the SIT Graduate Institute in Brattleboro, Vermont. This program introduced her to an educational philosophy that puts “students in the spotlight” with objective-driven, interactive lessons that encourage them to learn just as much from each other as they do from other resources.

Susan has since worked as an ESOL instructor, academic program manager, teacher educator, trainer of trainers, workshop/plenary facilitator, university lecturer, and curriculum writer. She also has experience working with the needs of the community and developing programs to fit those needs; most recently at Boston University but also in South Korea, Brazil and Ecuador where she designed, implemented and trained non-native English speaking teachers and trainers in English Education Teacher Development. Susan also likes bike riding, renovating and entertaining in her old (read: it needs tons of work!) Victorian house and traveling, which doesn’t happen as much these days (see old Victorian).

Peter Boon, MA in TESOL with merit, Tutor

Peter has worked as a teacher, course director, teacher-trainer and teacher-recruiter in schools in the UK and China for over ten years.

Teaching has given him adventures all over the world and now it as given him the opportunity to connect with more teachers and students than ever before through online work, which has been his main focus since 2016. Peter loves working with students and with new teachers and feels lucky to be in a position where he can now do both every day.

Peter has a DELTA and an MA in TESOL but thinks that all the most important things he has learnt about teaching have come from experiences with students in the classroom. It is his hope to be of help to the trainees on CIEE’s TEFL program as they prepare for the own experiences at the start of their teaching journeys and he hopes to hear about their adventures for years to come!

Annette Hall Smith, TESOL Master (Distinction), Diploma (Distinction) in Teaching Business English, RSA DELTA (honors), Tutor

Annette, a qualified Business Manager and consultant now living in France, was born in Leicestershire, England. She has panoptic business experience, gained in international blue chip companies and government service; her primary areas of expertise include Business Analysis and Project management. She is a native English speaker and speaks French. Having lived and worked in other countries including South Africa, India and France has given her valuable insight into the importance of culture when learning a language. Travel led to qualifying as a language professional, and she holds DELTA and TEFL qualifications including a Masters degree. Constant curiosity about outside influences led to specialization in tutoring, thus gaining valuable insight into human responses and motivation, which she has applied when working with others in the pursuit of success. An ardent traveler; her exposure to language and culture combined with her experience enables her to offer an empathetic and supportive approach to other language learners working towards a specific goal of English fluency.

Belén Rojas, Tutor and Platform Manager (Learnlight)

Belén is responsible for selecting, training, and supervising the tutoring team, as well as giving technical support to the tutors and trainees.

Belén was born in Melilla, a small city in the North of Africa, but has lived in Madrid, Spain since 2009.  In February 2014 Belén started in her current position, and she is thrilled to be working in the eLearning space because of the potential of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in all fields of education. Belén really enjoys designing, testing, experiencing and making the most of these Learning Management Systems (LMS) - and Canvas is one of her favorites.

Robert Pleva, Academic Advisor (Learnlight)

Robert supports the Tutor Manager in selecting and training the tutoring team, and is responsible for the tutoring methodology, developing pedagogical content for the tutorials, and ensuring the academic quality of the tutoring services.

Robert from the United States, and currently lives in New York, not very far from the Canadian border. He has been involved in EFL for 13 years, and he has received CELTA certification and taught English in Russia, Japan, the U.S., and online. Recently, Robert has been involved in the development of the latest e-learning and face-to-face courses. When he’s not teaching or designing course, he enjoys language learning, reading, and exploring nature in his beautiful region of the U.S.
