Asynchronous coursework allows for convenient scheduling, while synchronous sessions foster meaningful interactions with peers and instructors. The flexible six-week format enables educators to apply learnings while reflecting in real-time, enhancing their teaching practice.
Weeks 1 & 2: Cultural Awareness and Second Language Acquisition
You will start by looking at culture and second language acquisition. Regardless of the age of students you will be teaching and regardless of which country, culture, or community they come from, the more you learn about these learners, the more effective your teaching and their learning can be.
By the end of week 2, you will have gained awareness of cultural nuances and be better able to help bridge relationships within your classroom. You will be a facilitator of a community that is inclusive of all learners.
Weeks 3 & 4: Communicative Language Teaching and Classroom Communication
Next, you’ll look at Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), an approach to serving multilingual learners (MLs) which has many strategies that you can adapt within your teaching style. You will also consider various kinds of communication in the classroom.
By the end of week 4, you will be able to recognize a wide range of concepts and theories related to TESOL and develop skills for effectively teaching culturally and linguistically diverse learners. You will be able to evaluate the relative effectiveness of these approaches and methods as well as to be able to analyze the specific needs of your learners and adapt your instruction plans accordingly.
Weeks 5 & 6: Lesson Planning with MLs in Mind
Finally, you’ll study lesson planning strategies that you can use to adapt your lessons for multilingual learners (MLs). You’ll end with learning about SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol), an instructional framework that K-12 teachers can use when planning and teaching to help multilingual learners (MLs) succeed in their curriculum areas.
By the end of week 6, you will be able to create, select, and evaluate various materials for the classroom and make informed decisions about how to integrate them effectively into lessons so they are accessible to all learners, including MLs.
