Theatre Arts on London’s Stage

Greetings from London! The group has arrived and is off and walking... and walking... and walking! There is a lot of walking in London, so the students are already starting to feel like locals!

We had our first dip into the world of Theater yesterday with a Walking Tour of Covent Garden, lead by London Blue Badge Guide Emily.  The students saw the Theater Royal Drury Lane, owned by the one and only Andrew Lloyd Webber, heard stories about the theater where Bram Stoker was the director, and were fascinated by the ghost stories of the most haunted theater in London. They also visited the Actors' Church, St. Paul' Church Covent Garden, where they listed to the tale of Charlie Chaplin as a street performer. Street Performers are ubiquitous in Covent Garden, and it is a highly sought after job that is licensed by the government and performers can make upwards of $1000 per performance for their act.  The first record of street performances in this area was in 1662 with the first Punch and Judy act.

After our walking tour, the students had a bit of structured free time in the Covent Garden where they could visit shops and take some fun photos with their new friends.

The students are looking forward to their first West End show tomorrow, Everybody's Talking About Jamie, as well as a visit to the British Museum and their first theater class. Cheerio for now!
