Overview
Discover the flavors of Korea in Seoul, where royal cuisine, street food, and café culture all come together.

Culinary arts is the creative side of food—taking local ingredients, time-honored techniques, and bold ideas and turning them into new dishes, eye-catching menus, and unforgettable flavors. Few places showcase that creativity better than Seoul, where 600-year-old royal recipes share the streets with sizzling barbecue joints and neon-lit snack stalls.

Delve into the culinary history of South Korea, preparing traditional dishes and reflecting on their influence on modern cuisine. Together with fellow Global Navigators, you’ll join chef-led workshops that finish with plates you dreamed up yourself. You’ll also take an overnight trip to Jeonju, a city famous for its rich culinary heritage, where you’ll learn how to prepare the region’s iconic bibimbap and discover the traditions behind this beloved Korean dish. Each week builds toward a final challenge where you'll design and present a personal menu inspired by everything you've learned.

When you’re not in the kitchen, you’ll soak up Seoul’s energy. Explore local food markets and enjoy a Korean chef-led street-food tour, discovering the flavors and stories behind some of Korea’s most popular dishes. You’ll also spend a thrilling day at Lotte World, a world-class amusement park where you can enjoy rides, games, and snacks alongside your fellow students. Your summer in Seoul will sharpen your cooking skills, introduce you to Korea’s diverse food culture, spark new friendships, and show you how a love of food can shape future studies or a career in culinary arts.

The Destination

Welcome to Seoul, where palace courtyards, night markets, and Instagram-famous food stands all flavor the same day.

For centuries, Seoul has been Korea’s culinary compass—from royal court banquets that balanced five colors and flavors to today’s UNESCO-listed kimchi traditions. After the Korean War, Seoul entered a high-tech boom that transformed the capital into Asia’s pop-culture center. Today, neon K-pop billboards, whirring delivery scooters, and 17,000 espresso bars crowd its streets alongside symbols of tradition like jade-roofed palaces and earthen jars of fermenting gochujang.

The variety of food is endless, especially in markets like Gwangjang and the neon canyon of Myeong-dong, where you can crunch your way through “mayak” gimbap (bite-sized seaweed rice rolls), rainbow bingsu (shaved-ice sundaes), and dalgona candy (honeycomb toffee from Squid Game). Belt out K-pop hits in Hongdae’s neon arcades or join the crowd cheering street-dancer buskers under flashing LED signs. For a total change of pace, slip into a hanbok (traditional dress) and wander the candle-lit courtyards of 15th-century Gyeongbokgung Palace, watching the city’s glass towers rise just beyond the ancient walls.
