Creating Real French Experiences
As a language teacher, one of the aspects of this program that I truly love are the Community Conversations. Here in France, we call them "OZlefrancais" (dare to speak French). In American classrooms, we are limited to artificially created contexts for students to practice their langauge skills. But here in France, the students put their skills to the test in real life situations in an authentic context. The students are given a speaking task to find a local to interact with. Each task is directly tied to topics studied in class each morning. When we first introduced the Community Conversations, there was a look of panic on the faces of most of the students. Working with a partner, they soon realized that they had the skillset to be successful in speaking French with real French people. The students have yet to disappoint!
