Overview
Compose an original beat and uncover how technology transforms sound in Berlin.

Known for its deeply rooted culture in techno and audio innovation, Berlin bridges the technical with creative expression. Explore the fundamentals of sound recording, editing and mixing while immersed in the German culture of Brauhaus design (modern minimalism) and precision engineering. Join Global Navigators to capture city soundscapes like the echoes of U-bahn train tunnels or the ringing of church bells and remix them into an original track.

Delve into the science of music production in hands-on workshops and connect with local audio engineers and musicians in studio visits. Learn to use recording equipment and editing software and visit places steeped in music like the Berlin Philharmonie.

Beyond the mixing board, try currywurst (sausage with curry ketchup) with local teens and explore the historic East Side Gallery. On excursions, travel to Leipzig for a deep dive into classical composition and to Potsdam’s castles for fresh inspiration. Your time in Berlin will fine-tune your creative instincts and reveal Germany’s tradition of modern sound design.

The Destination

Welcome to Berlin, where the rhythm of innovation pulses through every street.

Nestled in north-eastern Germany, Berlin is known for its vibrant electronic scene and creative sound engineering studios. Once divided by a nearly 100-mile wall and peppered with Cold War radio towers, Berlin has reinvented its past, transforming abandoned war-time buildings into underground clubs and creative spaces. Historic sites like the Funkhaus, once a massive East German broadcast center, now hosts world-renowned producers and audio innovators. The city leads in audio experimentation, blending electronic music with advancements in sound design and recording technology.

In neighborhoods like Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain, local street musicians perform on busy corners and record shops curate inspiring albums from every genre. Historic landmarks such as the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Cathedral and the Jewish Memorial provide a glimpse into the nation’s complex past. Cozy cafes, riverside parks and weekend flea markets create countless opportunities to enjoy German Gemütlichkeit (comfort and coziness). From modern architecture to historic landmarks, Berlin offers a dynamic soundtrack of history and culture for your study abroad experience.
