Overview
Study film making in the “Hollywood of the East.”

Imagine filming scenes across Prague—its medieval bridges, Gothic towers, and winding alleyways becoming the backdrop for a story you’ve written and are now bringing to life. This is your summer to explore cinematography, script writing, and directing in Prague, where art has long been used to spark societal change, and filmmaking has never shied away from the strange.

Through hands-on workshops and expert-led sessions, you’ll dive into the essentials of visual storytelling. Study films from Czech New Wave icons like Miloš Forman and Věra Chytilová, then storyboard, shoot, and edit your own five-minute scene with a small team of fellow Global Navigators. You'll present your production at a film festival-style event, sharing your work with peers, teachers, and local professionals.

Outside the classroom, explore Prague and Czechia. Weekend excursions take you to Český Krumlov, a storybook town with Baroque theaters, and Kutná Hora’s medieval mines and eerie Bone Church. By the end of your summer, you’ll leave with new friendships, unforgettable memories, and a finished film scene that can launch your next step in the creative field.

The Destination

Welcome to Prague—a city of dramatic contrasts, rich history, and surreal cinema.

From Gothic cathedrals to Soviet-era blocks, Prague is a city built on striking contrasts. In just one century, the city shifted from imperial capital to Nazi-occupied territory, endured decades of Communist rule, and peacefully reclaimed its independence. That layered past helped shape the bold, absurd, and globally celebrated Czech New Wave cinematic movement of the 1960s.

Today, Prague remains a filmmaking hub, home to Barrandov Studios, one of Europe’s oldest and largest. Major productions like “Casino Royale,” “Mission: Impossible,” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” have all filmed here, drawn by the city’s visual drama, moody elegance, and cinematic range.

Between shoots, snack on mouth-watering Czech pastries like trdelník (cinnamon-sugar dough spiraled around a spit) and koláč (fruit- or cheese-filled) as you explore poster shops, puppet theaters, hand-blown glass studios, and open-air art markets. Whether you’re behind the camera or crossing Charles Bridge—the iconic 14th-century walkway lined with baroque statues of saints—Prague surprises at every turn, from the Astronomical Clock’s mechanical show to sweeping views of the “City of a Hundred Spires."
