What to Expect When Paying for Your Summer Abroad
We understand planning for a summer study abroad is a big decision—we’re here to help! CIEE is committed to making global education and international exchange programs accessible to as many students as possible through scholarships, discounts, and financial support.
Paying your CIEE program happens in a few simple steps:
When you apply: A $25 non-refundable application fee is due to submit your application
When you’re accepted: A $1,000 non-refundable confirmation deposit is due within a week to secure your spot.
The remaining program balance is due on April 1. If you confirm your participation on or after April 1, your balance must be paid within 30 days before your program departure.
Paying Over Time with a Payment Plan
CIEE offers PayPal Pay Later to eligible parents and legal guardians of High School Summer Abroad participants. Approval, repayment terms, payment schedule, and interest rates are determined by PayPal.
Before opting into PayPal Pay Later, families should consider the following:
- Interest begins at 9.99% APR and is based on factors such as creditworthiness and the total amount being financed.
- Pay Later is not available in certain U.S. states, including Alaska, Connecticut, Hawaii, or Washington.
- PayPal payment plans can only help cover your CIEE program tuition. Other fees, deposits, and flight costs are not eligible.
- CIEE cannot provide financial advice regarding this option.

What Discounts Does CIEE Offer?
While most of the financial help we offer is through scholarships, we do offer discounts to students who meet the following criteria:
- Alumni discount: If you completed a CIEE program in the past, you are eligible for a $500 alumni discount.
- Sibling/Legal Guardian discount: If your sibling or legal guardian has traveled on a CIEE program, you are eligible for a $500 sibling discount. If you and your sibling want to participate on a program during the same summer or academic year, one sibling will be eligible for a $500 sibling discount.
- USA Hosting discount: If your family has hosted in the past—or is currently hosting—a CIEE High School USA student, you are eligible for a $1,000 USA hosting discount.
- Program Leader Family discount: If your parent/legal guardian has previously traveled as a Program Leader with CIEE, you are eligible for a $500 discount.
- Military discount: If your parent/legal guardian has served or is serving in the military, you are eligible for a $500 discount.
- Globetrotter discount: If you are traveling on a school trip with CIEE, you are eligible for a $500 discount.
- CBYX discount: If you applied for CBYX but were not accepted, you are eligible for a $500 discount.
