Reaching New Heights: A Day Exploring the Magnificent Duomo Cathedral
The following blog was written by a student intern on a Summer 2026 CIEE high school summer abroad program.
One of the highlights of this week for our high school students was their time visiting the iconic Duomo, a breathtaking masterpiece that stands at the heart of Milan. From the moment we approached the cathedral, we were amazed by its beauty, intricate details, and centuries of history.
Construction of the Duomo began in 1386 and took nearly six centuries to complete. Today, it is one of the largest cathedrals in the world and a symbol of the city's rich cultural and artistic heritage. Its stunning Gothic architecture is unlike anything most of us had ever seen. Every inch of the exterior is covered with intricate carvings, soaring spires, statues, and decorative details that showcase the incredible craftsmanship of the artists and builders who worked on it throughout the centuries.
Stepping inside the cathedral was just as impressive. The interior is filled with beautiful artwork, towering columns, and stunning stained-glass windows. The colorful window panes tell stories through their detailed designs, allowing light to pour into the cathedral and create an inspiring atmosphere. From elaborate sculptures to intricate religious artwork that reflected the history and traditions of the region, everywhere we looked there was another masterpiece to admire.
One of the most memorable parts of our visit was the opportunity to climb to the top of the Duomo. As we made our way upward, we were rewarded with close-up views of the cathedral's incredible architectural details. Once at the top, we were treated to spectacular panoramic views of the city. Looking out across the rooftops, streets, and surrounding landscape gave us a new perspective and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of Milan.
Our visit to the Duomo was more than just a sightseeing experience, it was an opportunity to connect with history, art, architecture, and culture in a meaningful way. The beauty, craftsmanship, and history of this remarkable landmark left a lasting impression on all of us and made for an unforgettable day of exploration and discovery.
