How Studying Abroad in Rome Can Benefit Your Future
Studying abroad in Rome isn’t just about unlimited gelato and sightseeing – it's an experience that can boost your global awareness, provide daily personal growth, and help you stand out in an increasingly global world.
Global Perspective:
Living in Rome exposes you to a variety of worldviews and inevitably makes you a more globally aware student. CIEE does an excellent job of immersing students into the local culture through excursions. For example, students really enjoy the guided tours in the city and the multiple trips right outside of Rome. This year, CIEE took HSSA students to Florence, Perugia, Orvieto, and Sperlonga. Rome is extremely accessible to other cities in Italy, so for students who want to travel, you can’t go wrong!
Independence and Personal Growth:
Moving from the US to another continent can be daunting, and if you’re still on the fence, consider this – my experience showed me first hand that the personal growth from doing so is incredible. Plus, you’re only abroad for 3-4 weeks over the summer – what better way is there to spend your time? Yes, you’ll have to adapt to a new location and the Roman lifestyle, but you’ll develop soft skills you never thought you had! And, you won’t stop talking about it after you return home (trust me on that one!).
Networking and College Applications:
Many people want to know how HSSA programs will help them in their future, so here it is: studying abroad can create long-term connections with peers, professors and host families. It’s very common to return to Rome and visit your host family – and even the study center which was previously a palace (how cool!). Beyond the international network you build, you’ll definitely want to add it to your resume and college applications. Who knows, maybe a HSSA program will inspire you to study Italian further in college, or continue taking classes on Roman culture, writing and art.
Did you know that only 10% of US high school students study abroad?
CIEE Alumni like myself will absolutely confirm that studying abroad prepares you for future opportunities. But more importantly, the unique experience in Rome easily sets you apart.
