Highlights from the First Week on a CIEE High School Summer Abroad Program in London
This blog was written by a student intern on a CIEE program in Summer 2025. It offers a snapshot of their early experiences during the participants' first week in London.
Our London summer program is off to a fantastic start! As our new students arrived for their very first time studying abroad, the excitement was palpable. Here's a glimpse into the first few days of this unforgettable experience.
Arrival Day
After landing safely in London, students checked into their accommodation and settled into their new home away from home. The group headed over to the CIEE London Centre for a warm welcome session, where they were introduced to staff and fellow participants. Later that afternoon, everyone enjoyed a walking tour through the charming neighborhood of Bloomsbury, giving them their first real taste of life in the city. The day ended with a delicious dinner at a local Turkish restaurant — a perfect way to relax after a big travel day!
Orientation Day
The following day was Orientation Day. Students gathered to learn about their schedules, program expectations, safety guidelines, and what to expect during their stay in London. They also participated in a Bystander Intervention Training session — an important component of the program’s commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive community. After a day packed with information and introductions, everyone came together again for a fun and casual pizza party at the CIEE Centre.
Weekend Adventures
The weekend brought a change of pace and scenery as the group set out on a guided bus tour of London. This gave them a chance to see many of the city's iconic landmarks, from Big Ben and the London Eye to Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace, all while learning a bit about London’s rich history. After the tour, students branched off to enjoy activities based on their academic tracks. The Theatre group saw the musical Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, an unforgettable introduction to London’s renowned theatre scene.
Creative Writing students spent time at the Sherlock Holmes Museum, stepping into the world of the legendary detective. Meanwhile, the Sports Marketing group enjoyed a fun evening of bowling — the perfect mix of activity and team bonding.

What was the biggest surprise in your first few days abroad?
“I was really surprised by how different the architecture is here. Also, people walk everywhere — it's such a change from the U.S. where we rely so much on cars.”
How have you started building friendships within the group?
“In the Theatre group especially, it already feels like everyone is friends. There’s a great vibe — no cliques or negativity, which is awesome.”
What are you most looking forward to during the next few weeks?
“I’m really excited to see how the Theatre classes are taught here. I want to compare it to how I’ve learned back in high school — I think it’s going to be really different and inspiring.”
