Overview
Dive into Caribbean ecosystems and propose a sustainability project in San Juan!

Explore ocean ecosystems in a destination at the forefront of marine research. From coral reef to mangrove conservation, San Juan offers real-world insight into how communities are protecting their coastal environments. Team up with other Global Navigators on a group sustainability project focused on preserving marine ecosystems in Puerto Rico.

Join expert-led classes and meet local ecologists working to safeguard endangered species like sea turtles and manatees. Visit marine reserves like the Submerged Gardens, home to over 43,000 acres of protected marine habitat. Discover local conservation projects, such as coral gardening, where damaged reef sections are regrown in nurseries and transplanted back into the ocean.

Travel to new corners of the island and experience the glowing waters of Laguna Grande, one of the world’s few bioluminescent bays. You’ll also explore the El Yunque rainforest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system home to rare wildlife, like the endangered Puerto Rican parrot.

The Destination

Welcome to San Juan, the coastal capital of Puerto Rico, known as the "walled city."

Surrounded by turquoise waters and lush ecosystems, Puerto Rico is a living classroom for marine ecology and sustainability. Its coral reefs and mangroves are home to diverse marine species like sea turtles, manatees and tropical fish. Here, conservationists are employing innovative ways to protect these species, such as the use of 3D-printed artificial corals to rebuild marine habitats.

The colorful streets of Old San Juan boast a vibrant atmosphere, lined with Spanish colonial architecture and views of the Atlantic Ocean. Iconic sites like the El Morro fortress, dating back to 1539, tell stories of a time when the island needed defending from pirates. Sandy beaches provide a cozy place to soak up sunshine with local teens and to try Puerto Rican dishes like mofongo, savory, mashed, fried green plantains. Your time in Puerto Rico will offer a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems and the importance of protecting them while immersed in "Boricua" culture.
