Overview
Spend your summer telling incredible visual stories, photographing one of Africa’s most extraordinary landscapes!

Discover how to use photography to tell powerful stories about culture, community, and the natural world. Botswana offers an incredible setting for this work, where vibrant local life and world-renowned ecosystems exist side-by-side. Working with other Global Navigators, you’ll create a photo essay project that captures the stories you uncover.

In hands-on classes and guided fieldwork, you’ll build technical photography skills while creating an incredible portfolio. Take part in creative exchanges with local students, photograph wildlife in the Okavango Delta, and conduct photo-documentary interviews with locals. You’ll wrap up the program by participating in a photography exhibition at a local gallery, learning all the details from layout to captions and promotion, and presenting your own work.

You’ll have time to experience daily life in Gaborone. Attend a traditional braai (a Tswana-style barbecue shared with local families) and a live music session featuring marimbas, drums, and thumb pianos. By the end of your program, you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of how photography connects to culture and community—and how it can shape your future interests and goals.

The Destination

Welcome to Botswana, home to the world’s largest elephant population and a country where nearly 40% of its land is protected.

Independent since 1966, Botswana has grown into one of Africa’s most stable democracies, channeling its diamond wealth into schools, roads, and ambitious conservation projects. Gaborone mirrors that steady outlook with an easygoing vibe, with low-rise blocks, wide boulevards, and a sweep of open sky that encourages you to slow down and observe. Drive just twenty minutes beyond the city limits, and the scene flips: Mokolodi Nature Reserve unfurls into open bushland, where zebras graze beneath acacia trees, and the horizon feels endless.

Browse the open-air stalls of Gaborone’s Main Mall, where palm-leaf baskets, bright shweshwe cotton prints (traditional patterned fabric), and hand-carved wooden zebras overflow with color. Hike up Kgale Hill at sunrise for a panorama that stretches from city blocks to rolling bush, then refuel with seswaa (tender, slow-cooked beef shredded by hand) served over pap (creamy maize porridge). You’ll leave with a memory card full of vivid stories, and a firsthand sense of how a place can balance wild horizons with everyday community life.

Okavango Delta Visit

Explore the 15,000-square-kilometer Okavango Delta to learn how photographers practice responsible photography, capturing compelling images while respecting wildlife and ecosystems. Join a wildlife photography safari and keep watch for the “Big Five”—elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, and (if luck strikes) rhino—along with red lechwe, a water-loving antelope that bounds through the shallows, and more than 400 bird species overhead. Nowhere else offers this mix of water, desert, and dense wildlife, making the drive a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In the heart of the Okavango, you’ll explore photography as a powerful medium for storytelling and creative expression. Together with your fellow Global Navigators, you’ll spend time with local women who support their families through the region’s Shorobe basket-weaving tradition. You’ll document each step of the process as you try your hand at weaving and learn about the craft’s cultural significance. Through your lens, you’ll learn to tell the story of a community, its creativity, and the generations of knowledge woven into every basket.
