Picture yourself living in the heart of the city, right around the corner from the famous “wedding cake” white monument in Piazza Venezia and only 10 minutes walking distance from the Colosseum; trying your hand at a range of applied art techniques, from ancient to contemporary; taking Italian cooking lessons to prepare and enjoy scrumptious meals; or playing pick-up soccer or volleyball in your spare time. With the Colosseum in your neighborhood and Rome as your classroom, you’ll be completely immersed in the city’s dazzling culture. Lectures on Rome’s rich artistic history come alive through inspiring classes held onsite in museums and archaeological sites. Roll up your sleeves and get ready to apply and experiment with what you learn in hands-on workshops. Train in millennia-old methods of art production like mosaic design and Michelangelo’s own fresco painting technique. Then move through the ages to photography and filmmaking. Along the way, learn first-hand about the artists and creative processes that led to Rome’s legacy as a world center of art and architecture — both past and present.

The Destination
The Eternal City is famous for its cultural heritage, art scene, and delicious cuisine.
With a history spanning 3,000 years, Rome is one of the most culturally rich cities in the world. Ancient statues adorn museums housing priceless paintings and archaeological treasures. On this program you’ll visit major landmarks, including the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, Saint Peter’s Basilica, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel Ceiling, the Trevi Fountain and Mussolini’s own Forum. The Vatican Museums contain enough precious works to keep you busy for days.
During guided tours and onsite classes you’ll discover historical monuments, architectural icons and artistic masterpieces spanning antiquity, the Renaissance, Baroque and more modern periods.
What else can you do in Rome? Stroll through its many public parks, take in the majestic views from atop its legendary hills or catch up on the latest fashion by window shopping along the celebrated Via dei Condotti. Don’t miss out on the embarrassment of gelato choices! Go people-watching in busy cafés. Grab a plate of pasta or pizza al taglio (pizza by the slice), and live your summer with gusto!

Every day brings new discoveries and fun, but you can always count on a perfect balance between interactive instruction, excursions and free time! Here's what to expect on a typical day:
- 7:00 am: Get up and have breakfast at your hotel.
- 8:00 am: Walk or take public transportation to CIEE for morning instruction.
- 9:00 am - 12:00 pm: Interactive class with a local teacher. Format may change to workshops or guest lectures, depending on the day.
- 12:00 pm - 1:00pm: Have a group lunch and enjoy local cuisine with your friends.
- 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm: Gather back at CIEE to go on today's cultural activity or excursion.
- 1:30 pm - 5:00 pm: Each activity or excursion is designed to echo what you learned in class that morning.
- 5:00 pm - 7:00pm: Free time! Hang out with your friends and shop. Commute back to your hotel.
- 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm: Dinner.
- 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm: Wrap up any homework. Usually just readings or personal research for your project.
- 10:00 pm: Lights out!

Sample Activities:
- Climb to the top of St. Peter’s dome.

- Take a cooking class in the world’s gastronomical capital.

- Bike around the famous Villa Borghese Park on a pedal-powered treasure hunt.
- Test your artistic skills with a drawing workshop inside a National Museum in Rome.
- Picnic at the 17th-century Villa Pamphili and play soccer on its vast green.
- Take a day trip to the hills of Tivoli, home to two Unesco World Heritage Sites with grand Renaissance villas and gardens.
- Take an overnight trip to Florence, capital of the Tuscany region and home to many masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture.Shake it out to the rhythm of the Italian folkloric dance Tarantella.
