Unite with other impassioned high school students as a participant in Climate Change Mitigation and jumpstart your carbon-smart future.
Are you excited by big challenges? Do you want to help the environment by curbing climate change? And are you looking for a way to put sustainability ideas into practice? Here is your chance to make friends and take action as a member of our select group of changemakers in the Climate Change Mitigation program. The fun and activities unfold over a 3-week session on our campus on the very edge of the Monteverde cloud forest. And although 3 weeks flies by, the positive changes are forever, for both the Earth and you.
In the Climate Change Mitigation program, you’ll be immersed in the simplicity of farm life in a remote and rural setting as you learn the high-tech science of carbon and climate change. While you’ll spend part of your days in activities like milking cows and gathering eggs, you’ll also delve into the science of tropical forest ecology, reforestation, and climate-smart farming. Armed with these fundamentals, you and other members of the group will engage in a think tank exercise to propose ways make proposals toward the goal of enhancing carbon uptake while increasing biodiversity and sustainability. Your ideas will be founded on a healthy dose of science and will be limited only by creativity and imagination!
With mentoring from staff, your ideas will be transformed into project blueprints for actions. For the final week, you and your team will dedicate their efforts to carrying out projects that lower emissions, promote biodiversity, and make the world a little carbon-smarter.
"We showed that we are united and that we, young people, are unstoppable."
– Greta Thunberg, UN Youth Climate Summit, New York City, 21 September 2019
Get informed about the science of greenhouse gas emissions to help tackle one of the greatest challenges facing society today: climate change.
Unite with other Global Navigators and blend your collective knowledge, skills, and creativity into a proposal for carbon-neutrality.

Costa Rica is the destination, but the Costa Rican journey goes beyond borders.
Did you know? Costa Rica is a global leader in environmental sustainability, and nearly all of its energy is renewable. What’s more, it is one of few countries actively working toward a national goal of carbon neutrality. Over the past 25 years, Costa Rica has doubled its forest cover – while still building a healthy economy. It continues to innovate with sustainable agriculture, energy production, reforestation efforts, biodiversity and ocean resources protection. People around the world thus hold Costa Rica in admiration, as an example of what can be accomplished when people unite behind climate change mitigation. That’s one reason it’s a perfect place for the CIEE Climate Change Mitigation program!
A second great reason is that this tiny country is one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. Covering just 0.03% of the world's surface, it’s teeming with over 10,000 different types of tropical plants and animals – representing roughly 5% of the total species worldwide. Although only the size of West Virginia, Costa Rica has a wealth of geographical features and habitats, from rugged mountains and volcanoes to both dry and lush forests.
Cloud forests, one of the most unique and wonderous of all ecosystems -- and now endangered by climate change -- are found along the mountaintops at Monteverde, Costa Rica. Here, the quetzals, monkeys, and orchids still abound but the local scientists understand that their future is uncertain. Biologists and others have organized around the cause of climate change mitigation and lead local carbon-smart initiatives to help Costa Rica stay at the forefront of sustainability and carbon neutrality.
