Week 1 in Alicante: New Places and New Faces!
The following blog was written by a student intern on a Summer 2026 CIEE high school summer abroad program. Read on for a first-hand account of what it's like on program in Alicante, Spain.
This week, we welcomed 32 high school students to Alicante, Spain, and what an exciting start it has been! After arriving on Sunday and settling in with their host families, students spent Monday getting to know one another, meeting their teachers and program leaders, and beginning their journey in their new home for the next four weeks.
One of the highlights of the week was our guided city tour and scavenger hunt, which gave students the opportunity to explore some of Alicante’s most iconic landmarks. From the beautiful Mediterranean coastline and the bustling Explanada to the Cathedral of Saint Nicolas, local cafés, and favorite ice cream spots, students quickly began finding their way around the city while learning about its history and culture.
If I had to choose two words to describe our first week together, they would be growth and connection. Studying abroad often comes with a mix of excitement and uncertainty, especially during those first few days. Yet it has been incredible to watch students step outside their comfort zones, navigate unfamiliar situations, and support one another along the way. Whether they are figuring out public transportation, communicating with host families in Spanish, or discovering their new favorite places in the city, they are already building confidence and independence.
Of course, growth rarely happens without a few challenges. Students are adjusting to new routines, practicing their language skills in real-world situations, and learning that some choices—like wearing sandals on a long walking tour—might not be the best idea after all! These everyday experiences, both big and small, are helping students develop resilience, adaptability, and a deeper understanding of Spanish culture.
After just one week, it is already clear that this group is eager to learn, explore, and make the most of every opportunity. I am excited to watch their friendships grow, their confidence flourish, and their perspectives expand as they continue their adventure in Alicante. We are only getting started, and I cannot wait to see what the next few weeks bring!
