Top 5 Must-See Spots in Old Town, Tallinn

Summer in Tallinn is bright and vibrant, a perfect time to visit the Old Town, one of the most unique places in Estonia! Original stone walls from the mid-13th century protect this gem of a town. Old Town is quite special, but some spots deserve their own recognition.
1. Viru Gate
The iconic Viru Gate is the main entrance. Here you enter Old Town on Viru street and can gaze at the original wall that protects Old Town. Viru Street leads to the town center!
2. Town Center
The town center is home to many restaurants, shops, and events. The main attraction, however, is the Town Hall, constructed in 1404. Here, they held meetings, persecuted people, and even held punishments. The metal rings on the side of the building are where punishments were given. Here, offenders were chained to the building for a whole day, which gave their neighbors the perfect opportunity to heckle at them.
3. Town Hall Pharmacy
Located directly across the square from the town hall is the pharmacy. This pharmacy is the longest-running pharmacy in all of Europe, continuously running since 1422. They still run as a pharmacy today! When stopping in, make sure to grab the pill-shaped marzipan, which acted as an anti-depressant in olden days!
4. Riigikogu
Located on the top of the hill in Old Town, the Riigikogu (Estonian Parliament) is a must-see! The pink building stands proudly and serves as the main governmental building in Estonia. If possible, a tour of the building and Pikk Hermann (the tower attached to parliament) gives great insight into the inner workings of government and amazing views!
5. Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform
Old Town has amazing views from the Kohtuotsa viewing platform. From here, visitors can view Old Town and downtown Tallinn. This viewing platform is perfect for photo opportunities!
