Utrecht, A New Side of the Netherlands

Midweek, we took a day trip to Utrecht, an even older city than Amsterdam, but just as full of life—maybe even more in some ways. The canals here are different. Instead of just running alongside the streets like in Amsterdam, there are steps that lead you down to a whole other level. There you’ll find little cafés, restaurants, and spots to just sit by the water. It almost feels like a hidden layer of the city, like you’ve stepped into a completely different world.
Utrecht is also home to Nijntje (aka Miffy), the beloved bunny character that’s everywhere in Dutch culture. Around the city, you’ll spot different Miffy statues, each one dressed in a different colorful outfit. It adds such a sweet, playful energy to the streets and makes the city feel even more inviting.
While we were there, we went on a kayaking excursion through the canals, nearly 4 miles, and apparently that was the second shortest route! It was such a fun way to see the city from the water, especially with the sunny weather. Definitely a workout, though. Everyone was feeling it by the end, but spirits were high the whole time.

The students really liked Utrecht. One of them said this was her favorite kind of European city, more calm, cozy, and personal. Another said they could totally see themselves living here instead of Amsterdam and even going to university here someday. There’s something about Utrecht that just feels warm and lived-in, like a place where you can actually imagine your day-to-day life.

This trip was a great reminder that the Netherlands has so many sides to it—every city has its own pace and personality. Utrecht gave us a new one to fall in love with.
