Maximizing Your Free Time as a High School Student in Madrid
Hola, future adventurers! You've landed in Madrid, and the city is buzzing with summer energy. Beyond your classes and amazing CIEE excursions, you'll have some free time. This isn't just downtime; this is your chance to truly make Madrid your own! So, how do you conquer free time in this incredible city as a high school student? Let's dive in!
For a quick authentic Spanish experience, consider a coffee & churros run! If you have about an hour, head near a landmark like Puerta del Sol where you can find the Chocolateria San Gines that is in walking distance from CIEE's Madrid campus; truly an authentic treat: churros con chocolate! It's sweet and very delicious. If you're looking for a moment of calm; Madrid has its iconic El Retiro Park (Parque del Retiro), even 30 minutes can refresh you. Grab a bench, find a shady spot, and simply engage in some people-watching. This is the perfect way get a nice, relaxed Madrid afternoon atmosphere. For lunch or a snack, you can easily find a terraza with tapas spot. Madrid has lots of tabernas in almost every street corner. You could also explore a market like Mercado de San Miguel (which, while Mercados are a bit touristy, they are great for a quick look). These offer a fast, flavorful bite and an easy way to sample a variety of Spanish cuisine.
Summer afternoons in Madrid can be extremely hot, and sun can be strong, so it's wise to choose activities that are suitable for the temperature of the day.
If you appreciate art or simply need to escape the heat, consider an art museum. Bring your CIEE student card for discount or free entry to museums. You can also visit one of Madrid's world-class museums. You don't need to see everything; instead, focus on one wing or a specific masterpiece at the Prado, Reina Sofía, or Thyssen-Bornemisza museums. As a bonus, these museums are wonderfully air-conditioned! If you're looking for vibrant energy, take a Gran Vía Glimpse. This street is known for its shops, theaters, and impressive buildings, making it perfect for wandering around and some window shopping. And if you're feeling tired after your morning explorations, head back to your homestay or for a quick nap, some quiet reading time, or simply to relax. This helps you recharge for the evening, when Madrid truly comes alive.
In the evening, as the sun sets, Madrid's city transforms offering vibrant experiences even if you only have a short amount of time to enjoy them. Head to a lively street in neighborhoods like La Latina or Malasaña.
It's important to remember that dinner in Spain typically doesn't start until 9 PM or later, making tapas an ideal option to maintain your hunger. If your schedule permits, try to catch a sunset moment. A quick trip to a spot like the Temple of Debod (Templo de Debod) can offer ancient Egyptian vibes along with a stunning view over the city.
To make the most of your free time, always prioritize hydration by carrying a water bottle everywhere. Protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen and a hat. Comfortable shoes are a must, as you'll be doing a lot of walking, even in short walks. Embrace the local pace by remembering that dinner, socializing, and activities happen later here. Always be mindful of your belongings, especially in crowded areas. Lastly, take advantage of every free moment as an opportunity to practice your Spanish with locals in shops, cafes, and on the street.
Embrace the adventure, try new things, and enjoy every moment of your incredible high school summer abroad!
