One of our last excursions entailed a 20 minute bus ride outside of Sevilla to an ancient site of Roman ruins. First founded as a legionare battle encampment, it later became a settlement and a town of central regional power. We first toured the high ground ruins where the more powerful would have resided. We saw the ruins of social bath houses, bread ovens, Wells and yes, even latrines. Included was much beautiful stone and pebbled artwork of the era. After, we paraded into to arena, built to hold 25,000, where we used our imaginations to envision gladiators and animals serving as sport and entertainment. This was an important excursion that helped us to focus on the Roman conquest of the region, whereas in Sevilla, it is only seen as a layer within it's diverse architectural history.
