An Insider View of CIEE’s Home in Shanghai
The following blog was written by a student intern on a Summer 2026 CIEE high school summer abroad program.
The home of CIEE Shanghai is nestled within East China Normal University’s historic Putuo campus, situated within the Putuo district of Shanghai along North Zhongshan Road. Founded in 1951, ECNU is one of China’s most prestigious universities and its Putuo campus is the original campus of the University which has expanded to two campuses.
The university is considered a “Garden University,” a nickname given to it due to it’s lush, carefully maintained gardens and abundant natural spaces that weave through campus. Walking through ECNU feels less like navigating a university and more like strolling through a park.
Beyond the campus gates, the surrounding neighborhood has a diverse array of food vendors and local restaurants, with everything from street desserts to sit-down restaurants, offering the perfect opportunity to explore Shanghainese cuisine.
Just a short walk away is a seven-story mall that serves as a one-stop shop for students. Whether you need everyday essentials, a shopping day, or an authentic Chinese dining experience, the Global Harbor Mall has it all.
From the gardens to the restaurants to the Global Harbor Mall, CIEE’s home in Shanghai has so much to offer.
