Things I've Noticed the Spanish Girls Wearing
In the many months I had to prepare for this journey, fashion was one of the main things on my mind. European style is so simple yet so stylish and chic. Before I even thought about packing, I took inventory of my closet and tried to get rid of as much as I possibly could. I knew I would have to pack somewhat lightly so I wanted to try to make it easy for myself. I peeled through my closet and although I have a hard time getting rid of things, I had to make cuts to make it more manageable.
Despite my goal of getting rid of things, I also ended up doing a lot of shopping at home before packing. I wanted to create somewhat of a capsule wardrobe and have plenty of basic pieces. I stocked up on simple tee’s, sweaters and any items that would go with everything. I’m not a very colorful dresser to begin with so creating a simple closet with lots of neutrals was easy for me.
Since I’ve been here, I am constantly taking note of what the cool Spanish girls are wearing. They always look put together and chic while still looking effortless and comfortable. They wear a lot of flats and sneakers. I’ve always been one to wear more basic tops but here I’ve noticed they wear a lot of blouses and fashionable tops. The girls love wearing scarves and layers with cute jackets or blazers.
The weather has been quite chilly in the mornings but later in the day when the sun is out it gets warmer. Wearing layers is a great way to build an outfit especially on the in between weather days. As it gets colder, I’ve noticed more trench coats and quilted puffer types of jackets. Also, long puffer vests seem to be popular.
I love seeing what other people are wearing and taking inspiration to build my own wardrobe. There are so many cute boutiques to shop at and so many vintage/ second hand stores here. While you can't go wrong with the classics like Zara, H&M and Mango, there are soooo many local stores with good quality clothes and accessories. I think the key is to get the basic staple pieces from the bigger stores, but find your cute and unique items at the boutiques.
There have been multiple times I’ve seen people walking around and admired the bag they were carrying- so much so I would’ve bought it off of them. I took mental photos of those bags and have been searching for something similar but it's hard to find. While there are a lot of Longchamps around, there are so many different bags. My favorite looks I’ve seen are woven bags, studded ones and bags with tassels. These simple details really add to even the most effortless looks.
To sum it all up, these are the top staple pieces in Spanish girl style from what I've observed so far.
Flats
A cute but comfortable flat shoe is key. Ballet flats, flat sneakers, flat loafers and mules can be worn with any outfit. Riding boots seem to be coming out as the seasons change. I personally love a heel and a boot with a heel but with the cobblestone streets and all the walking on a daily basis, flats are the way to go. You can’t go wrong with a cute pair of Addidas for both comfort and fashion.
Scarves
Again as the seasons change, scarves are a great way to layer for warmth while also adding a bit of flare to each outfit. I love a chunky scarf, but I’ve seen so many people wearing smaller scarves to compliment their looks.
Blouses
Like I mentioned before, everyone is wearing cute blouses. Tops with ruffles, ties or peplum like are very in and can be seen everywhere. Patterned blouses are also a great look.
A jacket/ blazer
Layers are everything and there are so many unique jackets I’ve seen here. High neck jackets are super in, along with jackets with details like zippers or buttons. Leather jackets are definitely a staple piece for any closet, especially those nighttime looks but also can be great to throw over a sweater. Blazers are a classic and will always be in and can really elevate any outfit.
Jewelry
Fun jewelry is the best way to add flare to your looks. All the Spanish girls always have cute earrings and necklaces. The best part about jewelry is it’s so customizable based on your personal taste so you can really do as much or as little as you want. Whether you want your jewelry to be simple yet chic or make a statement, adding these little accessories is a great way to add to you looks.
