2026-2027 Teach Abroad in Spain is Cancelled...What to do Next and Exploring Other Options
It was announced last week that the CIEE Teach Abroad program for the 2026-27 school year has been cancelled due to restructuring from the Spanish government. While this is very disappointing news for those who were looking forward to coming (and staying) in Madrid, it does not have to mean the end of your Spanish/Travel Adventure. Here, we will briefly explore some other options for what you can do next.
Volunteer in Spain
If you want to come or stay in Spain for longer than a week (but shorter than 6 months), this is a perfect opportunity for you. While you do have to support yourself financially, the program through CIEE places you with a host family, where you are compensated with room and board. Other websites where you can find these opportunities include WWOOF and World Packers where you can make an account for a small fee. You also save the hassle and expenses of visa fees since tourists are allowed to stay in Spain for up to 90 days!
Enroll in a Spanish Academy
This is likely the easiest and most straightforward way to come and stay in Madrid, but it is also on the pricier side. In order to qualify for the visa, you must be enrolled at an accredited Spanish academy taking classes for at least 20 hours a week for either 6 months to a full year. Con: Tuition can cost a pretty penny, with a range of $3,000-$6,000. Pro: With the student visa, you would also be eligible to work part-time for up to 30 hours a week. If you have the means, some experience travelling/living abroad, and are dedicated to improving your Spanish, this might be the path for you.
Enroll in a University
If you are looking to stay in Spain long-term, enrolling in a master's program could be your next move. While this does require more of a commitment, there is a higher return on investment since you are able to have a two-year visa extension after completing your degree. Some schools do require a proficiency in Spanish, but there are English programs available as well. Admissions for school usually close in June to late July for the Fall semester.
Become an Au Pair
If you are able to get a Spanish visa or have an EU passport, you can also become an Au Pair. As an Au Pair, you are essentially a live-in English nanny who is compensated with room, board, and a weekly “pocket change” of typically €70-€100. While it is a great opportunity for immersion and allows you to save a ton on rent, pay, and flexibility are both low. AuPair World is a great website that connects you with families looking for Au Pairs from around the globe.
Consider other Programs
CIEE offers other Teach Abroad programs in Ireland, Thailand, and South Korea. The Ireland summer program comes with a 150-hour TEFL certification ($1,000 value), while the Thailand program includes housing. There are two South Korea programs, and both offer housing AND a TEFL certification as a part of the program fee. As a CIEE alumnus, you are also eligible for a 10% discount and can get your application fee waived.
Although this might not be the pivot we want to make, there is still much to be desired and explored. Do not let this news become a barrier between you and your dreams. Good things come to those who try and try again!
