  1. Got on the bus going the wrong way at 3:13am

How to avoid making this mistake: check which way the bus is going

  2. Went on to miss the connecting bus stop at 3:57am

How to avoid making this mistake: don’t miss the bus stop (or do, because you met funny people, made 4 friends, and ended up just taking a 10 euro Uber)

  3. Thought I’d be able to watch shows on Hulu (spoiler alert: Spain doesn’t have access to Hulu)

How to avoid making this mistake: get a VPN if you want to finish The Bear like I did

  4. Asked for water at a restaurant multiple times and got charged 12 euros for it

How to avoid making this mistake: ask for “agua del grifo” and they will give you tap water, which is both delicious and free

  5. Thought I would struggle to make friends

How to avoid making this mistake: trust that you will meet incredible people who are like-minded and absolutely hilarious too

  6. Tried to buy wine at the supermercado at 10:07pm

How to avoid making this mistake: buy it before 10pm (they stop selling alcohol then)

  7. Said, "Estoy caliente"

How to avoid making this mistake: ...you will learn not to say this

  8. Paid 26 euros for an extremely average lunch

How to avoid making this mistake: do not eat near Sol (or Plaza Mayor for that matter). Also, if you happen to walk into a place but don’t see anything interesting on the menu, politely say thank you and just go somewhere else

  9. Walked into the bank with 5 girls and expected to all open bank accounts. They turned us away and said we needed appointments for next week AKA they just didn’t want to help all of us at the same time

How to avoid making this mistake: go alone

  10. This one wasn’t me but someone else ate cold meatballs from the grocery store and got food poisoning

How to avoid making this mistake: don’t eat cold meatballs from the grocery store

Considering all the things that could go wrong when moving to a foreign country, I'd consider myself quite lucky so far...especially because although I have no doubt that this list will continue to grow, the list of everything I'm learning is simultaneously getting longer too.

And that list? Oh, that list makes it all worth it.
