Overview
Film your story in Auckland, where Pacific surf, fern-draped rainforest, and island vistas all come together in one epic backdrop.

Spend your summer learning the basics of filmmaking, from story and framing to sound and editing. Auckland surrounds your project with volcanic peaks, black-sand beaches, and a thriving screen scene that helped put New Zealand on the map through blockbusters like The Lord of the Rings. With other Global Navigators, you’ll brainstorm, storyboard, and shoot a short film that’s completely your own.

Dive into visual storytelling as you analyze films from across the Asia-Pacific and develop your own characters and narratives. Learn how filmmakers shape mood and meaning from first concept through post-production, with insights from local film professionals. Through location scouting in creative city neighborhoods and along Auckland’s dramatic coastline, you’ll see how real places become unforgettable settings.

Beyond the camera, you’ll have time to soak up Auckland life. Special outings, from a behind-the-scenes experience at the Auckland Theatre Company to a hands-on Māori flax-weaving workshop, reveal new facets of New Zealand storytelling and culture. Along the way, you’ll sharpen your creative voice, see where storytelling can take you, and imagine new possibilities for your future in film and beyond.

The Destination

Welcome to Auckland, where global cinema meets stunning natural beauty.

Auckland is an ideal place to study filmmaking, where Māori and Pacific storytelling traditions meet one of the Southern Hemisphere’s most dynamic screen industries. New Zealand helped bring cinematic worlds like “The Lord of the Rings” to life, and Auckland—home to major studios, film festivals, and a thriving creative scene—offers an inspiring place to explore visual storytelling. Built across more than 50 volcanic cones and framed by two harbors, the city’s dramatic geography and multicultural energy make it a setting where story, landscape, and culture constantly collide.

Between classes, grab fish and chips on the Viaduct, try a flaky mince-and-cheese pie or hokey pokey ice cream, and wander the food stalls of the Auckland Night Markets. Take in sweeping harbor views from Mount Eden’s volcanic summit, or explore the boutiques, murals, and cafés of Ponsonby. The city blends outdoor adventure, creativity, and coastal life in a way that feels unmistakably New Zealand.

Top Rated Activities

Overnight to Raglan

Take an overnight trip to Raglan, a laid-back surf town on New Zealand’s wild west coast known for black-sand beaches, creative energy, and epic ocean views. Paddle by kayak through the calm waters of Raglan Harbour, one of the country’s largest natural inlets, then hike through lush forest to Bridal Veil Falls, where water drops 55 meters into a fern-lined gorge. Spend time at legendary surf beaches like Manu Bay, famous for one of the world’s longest left-hand breaks and featured in the surf classic “The Endless Summer.”

Between adventures, explore Raglan’s bohemian center filled with surf shops, galleries, and cafés, grab classic fish and chips by the water, and watch the sun sink into the Tasman Sea. From black-sand shores shaped by ancient volcanoes to a beach culture where barefoot “jandals” (Kiwi for flip-flops) are practically a uniform, Raglan offers a fun, immersive taste of New Zealand’s relaxed west coast lifestyle.

Day Trip to Visit Hobbiton Movie Set

Step into Middle-earth on a day trip to Hobbiton Movie Set, set on rolling sheep farmland in the Waikato region, about two hours south of Auckland. Wander through the 12-acre movie set, where 44 Hobbit Holes, the Party Tree, and the Green Dragon Inn bring the Shire to life in astonishing detail. First built for The Lord of the Rings in 1999, with help from the New Zealand Army, and later permanently rebuilt for The Hobbit trilogy, the set reveals the immense craftsmanship behind cinematic world-building.

As you explore gardens, winding paths, and storybook façades tucked into the hillsides, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at how an ordinary farm became a global film icon now welcoming more than half a million visitors each year. For aspiring filmmakers, it’s a chance to see how setting, design, and imagination can transform a landscape into movie magic.
