Overview
Participate in community-level conservation efforts for wild African species in Rabat, Morocco.

Rabat’s mix of coastal, forest and urban environments offers firsthand insight into minimizing human impact on natural habitats. Morocco’s capital plays a vital role in the country’s conservation efforts, with protections in place for native species like the Barbary macaque.

With fellow Global Navigators, assess strategies used by wildlife conservationists in Northern Africa. Collect data and analyze how urban development impacts coastal ecosystems. Venture to the forests of the Atlas Mountains, home to endangered species including the Barbary leopard and Cuvier's gazelle.

Uncover the traditions of Arab and Berber life as you stroll ancient medinas (walled cities) and souks (markets). Sip sweet Moroccan mint tea with locals and visit historical landmarks like Hassan Tower. On excursions, travel to Marrakesh, an imperial city rich in history, and the Sahara Desert, where you’ll sleep in a desert camp in the dunes. Your time in Rabat will prepare you for a career in conservation and demonstrate how you can contribute to your own community back home.

The Destination

Welcome to Rabat, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities set on the Atlantic coast.

With its diverse landscapes ranging from rugged coastline to fertile plains, Morocco is home to a variety of ecosystems. Rabat stands at the crossroads of modern conservation efforts and centuries-old traditions. The country’s protected wetlands, forests and reserves support unique species of endangered migratory birds like the marbled teal and the northern bald ibis, making Morocco an emerging leader in North African wildlife protection.

The Chellah ruins, once a Roman settlement, now serve as a quiet haven for nesting storks. The Oudayas Kasbah gardens offer a peaceful space filled with native plants. The country’s royal history is on display at the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the resting place of the king who led Morocco to independence, and the Royal Palace of Rabat, home to Morocco’s current king. Along the banks of the Bouregreg River, daily life unfolds at a slower pace. The traditional culture of Morocco will provide an enriching experience as you connect to a new corner of the globe.
