What makes a good helado?
"Eres lo que comes." Or, in English, "you are what you eat." This was the message that Antonino, the owner of a small chain of artisanal ice cream shops, shared with us today.
We attended a workshop in which we learned the history of ice cream and how it is made. More importantly though, we learned why Antonino makes the ice cream in the way that he does. In every location of his business (Bolas), they make the ice cream each day with natural ingredients, trying their best to use what is in season.
Some students did a blind taste test to see if they could tell the difference between the industrial product and the fresh ice cream that Antonino was making. Most distinguished very easily between the two and preferred Antonino's ice cream.
We loved tasting the different flavors (lemon, strawberry, chocolate and kiwi) and walked away with a lot more knowledge on one of our favorite summer treats.
