On Tuesday, students visited the Parlement of Brittany to learn about the French legal system, the history of the building, and the meaning of the beautiful artwork. In class, students are learning how to describe architectural details and discover and report on historical events.

We learned about the evolution of the building, which lasted from 1618 to 1655, and decorative work lasted until 1709!

A fire destroyed part of the building in 1720 and remnants of the fire are still visible to this day.

We discovered that each of the paintings had allegorical meanings that represent justice, such as the sword for punishment, the balance of egality, and an eye that overlooks and sees all. There were also suns hidden in the ceilings as a reference to Louis XIV, the roi soleil.

Students asked questions about the French legal system and found out that French citizens can serve jury duty at the age of 23 compared to the Americans at 18!
