Tour of the Mallorcan Fortress
Today we had the opportunity to visit the castle/fortress in Palma, called Bellver. It is situated on the hills outside the city center. It was constructed in the 13th century by Jaime II, who was then king of Mallorca. The fortress served as a military outlook to overlook the bay and city for incoming invaders from both land and sea. It's purpose has changed throughout the years, first as a military fortress, then as a royal palace for two years, and later a prison. Now, its serves as a musuem, with many interesting facts about the history and development of Palma from the times of the Roman Empire to present day.
Our favorite part of the tour was being able to go up on top of the castle and overlook Palma and it's surrounding areas. It was a beautiful sight to see.
