Tea Ceremony
Students experienced the ancient art of tea ceremony with a tea ceremony master today. All students were able to try the maccha, the green tea used at tea ceremonies, and eat a sweet snack called okashi. The okashi today was a mochi (rice cake) which was molded to resemble ajisai (hydrangea), the flower blooming in season now. Students were instructed how to appreciate the teacup, drink the tea, and learned the history of some of the important objects placed for viewing, such as the scroll on the wall. Students also learned some interesting facts, such as that all tea comes from the same tea plant (including earl grey and green tea!) and the complicated process involved in producing maccha tea. Everyone left with a greater understanding and appreciation for the tea ceremony.
