Face-to-Face With Sydney Wildlife: Students Share Their Favorite Moments

Most people visit zoos or aquariums to see wildlife. But in Sydney, CIEE high schoolers have the chance to do much more than just watch. From snorkeling alongside sea turtles to feeding stingrays and standing just feet away from a rescued koala, students are immersed in Australia’s beauty in unforgettable, hands-on ways.

Manly Snorkel and Beach Clean-Up

"The Manly snorkeling and beach clean-up was an unforgettable experience. The water was cold, but it was the clearest and most beautiful water I have ever been in (and I live in Florida). The wildlife took my breath away, from sea urchins to sea turtles to blue groupers, I was in awe of everything I got to see. After we snorkeled, we did a short hike on the cliffs where we were lucky enough to see whales before finishing the activities with a beach cleanup. I am so grateful to CIEE and their staff for giving me the opportunity to have so many days filled with new experiences and learning opportunities."

Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters

"Being able to feed the rays was the coolest thing about this experience. I loved being able to sit with them and learn their names as they swam up to us. I also really enjoyed seeing all the baby rays that they take care of, as they would come up to the surface and splash us to get food. The shark encounter was such a unique and interesting experience because we were able to sit right in front of the sharks, which is something I wouldn’t have been able to do back home."

Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary

"When we went to the koala sanctuary, we first had a fascinating lesson about koalas. I was extremely surprised to hear about how much of a niche specialist they are and how much effort it takes to keep them wild. Koalas also have very few natural defenses, so nonnative species like dogs and cats (along with cars) are a serious threat. When we entered the sanctuary, there were many koalas high up in the trees, looking like fluffy gray beach balls. I enjoyed my time seeing them recover their strength and realizing how much people can help wildlife in diverse ways."

Taronga Zoo Workshop

"My experience at Taronga Zoo was absolutely incredible, and being able to interact with the Australian wildlife felt amazing. I was able to see huntsman spiders, platypuses, echidnas, and more. All of the animals were very friendly, and it was a dream of mine to be able to see them. Learning about the animals and being able to touch them was my favorite part, though, especially the echidna."

Together, these experiences have shown students that conservation isn’t just something you read about; it’s something you can see, touch, and be part of. They leave with not just photos, but a real connection to the wildlife and people working to protect it.
